Tricky decisions in choosing a new mattress for comfort and support

Hello

we have been looking at Hypnos bespoke-finesse-mattress

and another Dreams flaxby masters guild 4450 pillow top mattress

they’re both pillow topped and fairly nice but when researching online I came across your website which looks interesting.

My husband and I sleep in separate beds and so we need 2 new king size mattresses. We like the same kind of thing / feel  but I think he needs slightly more support. I’m 5foot 3 and 10st 10oz and Tom is 5 foot 10 and is around 15 stone d  say.

as we are buying 2 budget is a bit of an issue.

we want to get the best we can for our ££.

we like something medium/firm but which feels a bit luxurious which is why we looked at the pillow top.

What do you recommend? Budget wise didn’t really want to spend more than £1500 per mattress and so I was leaning towards the naturals.

any pointers greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting us regarding new mattresses for yourself and your Husband.

First and foremost, the mattresses which you have been looking at in Furniture Village being the bespoke-finesse-mattress and the Flaxby mattress in Dreams, as you state, are pillowtop mattresses.    We do not make these types of mattresses as they can only be rotated around which means the lifespan of the mattress is not as long as a mattress that can be fully flipped over.   Mattresses that have fillings and fibres on both sides, means that they can be turned over which allows the fillings to settle evenly.

When choosing a new mattress, you need to ensure that not only do you receive the correct level of support but also the correct level of  comfort.   The support is provided by the internal spring unit and this is based upon height and weight, whereas comfort, is provided by the upholstery fillings which are on top of the spring unit and is really dictated by your sleeping positions ie: side back or front.  At your body weights and heights, you both require a medium spring tension for support.   We would not put anyone onto a firm spring unless they were over 17.5st otherwise it would be like lying on a table top of wire.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The mattresses within our Artisan Range contain differing amounts of natural fibres.    Natural fibres create the coolest sleeping surfaces.   The top layer of most of our Artisan mattresses are wool and wool is temperature regulating so will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

The Artisan 1500 provides the sleeper with the medium to firm level of comfort that you are looking for however please work on the basis that the lighter you are the firmer the mattress will feel and vice versa.   A kingsize mattress retails at £1560.00.

As you require a mattress that is supportive but luxurious at the same time, you may need to add a separate mattress topper which will provide another level of comfort however we would not advise adding a mattress topper at the very beginning as you need to sleep on the mattress for about 4 weeks as it takes this length of time for your body to adjust to a new mattress.  If after this time you do require the mattress to feel slightly softer then it is at this time that you would add the topper.

We do have our John Ryan Express mattress which contains natural fibres and can come with a firm level of comfort however this mattress is not as firm as the Artisan 1500 so is an alternative mattress for you to look at.   This mattress retails at £1150.00 for a kingsize and comes with the medium spring tension for support.

I hope this is of assistance to you however please do not hesitate to call our friendly team for further advice or information as we understand that purchasing a new mattress can be a daunting task - 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
