Unable to decide on a mattress...
Hi,
So I'm contacting you on behalf of my parents who can't decide on a mattress, nor a price.
My father would be quite happy to spend £250 but my mother wants to spend more around the £500~ area. I personally think they should spend more than that considering how much you spend sleeping. If they prefer the £1000 mattress listed below I know my mother would want to pay the extra cost but I know my father won't want to. Is there any discounts that can be offered on this mattress?
Their current mattress is fairly old now and they toss and turn at night a lot, my father prefers a more medium mattress but my mother prefers a firmer mattress. She suffers with lots of back and hip pain.
The zip & link mattresses are out of their price range but they'd be happy with a firm mattress. They're mostly back sleepers but also side sleepers.
They tried some mattresses today and found some they thought were fairly comfy:
- "Hypnos Ortho Bronze Firm Deluxe" from Land of Beds
- "Divan Burmuda Firm Support" from Bensons for Beds
We use your website and it gave the following matches:
- "Origins Pocket Reflex 1000""
- "Artisan 1500""
Can you tell me if it's possible to try both of these mattresses and still be able to return them for a full refund?
They want to be able to compare them to the Hypnos Ortho Bronze Firm Deluxe mattress which they've managed to try in a Premier Inn.
Regards
~ Ryan
Hi Ryan,
Thank you for your enquiry. It can be tricky working out how much to spend and see what the best value is. We have a handy table below on what you can expect. In terms of discounts have you looked in our Outlet as we offer up to 50% off in there?
How much to spend on a double mattress? | What can I expect for my money? |
---|---|
Under £500 | Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress. |
£500 | Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses. |
£750 | The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models. |
£1000 | Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models. |
£1250 | Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content. |
£1500 | Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres |
£1500-£2000 | Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress |
£2000+ | You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method. |
£5000+ | A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres. |
The Origins Pocket 1500 has a medium feel upholstery constructed with man-made fibres and a medium spring tension as standard. This spring tension supports body weights between 8 stone and 16 stone. The Artisan 1500 has a firmer medium upholstery constructed with 53% natural fibres and can have the spring tension selected to suit.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
We would not normally recommend firm upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees. As your parents prefer a firm mattress I would recommend looking at the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 which has a medium spring tension as standard and a firmer feel upholstery although not as firm as an orthopaedic mattress. As this is designed for a platform base, this type of base would give the mattress it's true feel.
Their body weights would also affect the feel, ie. this mattress would feel softer to a heavier person than a lighter person. Without their bodyweights, I could not say if the spring tension on this mattress would give them the correct level of support. This is important when choosing a new mattress especially for anyone with back problems.

If after trying a mattress for a good month or so to get a true feel for the mattress they found that they were not getting along with it, they could return the mattress to us under our 60 day love it or return it guarantee for either a full refund or exchange it for another one. If the second mattress was found to be unsuitable the only thing we could do would be to collect the mattress and issue a full refund minus £85 for the second collection.
I hope this is helpful and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss their individual needs please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
