A customer asked

Hi We are looking for a new king size mattress as ours is 10 years old and is leaving me with a sore lower back especially when i have a bit of a lie in.

our budget is at the moment around £200.

I was originally looking at something called kensington pocket sprung for about 195 from a few online retailers.

do you have any better suggestions as after reading this site i am guessing that the mattress above wont be of great quality.

I am about 14 st and my partner is about 10st.

I was thinking i need a firm level of support due to the back pain I am getting.

Thanks >

Hi Barry,

Due to your limited budget you're going to struggle to get any type of half decent pocket sprung mattress in a kingsize.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

My advice would be to go for foam mattress as you will be able to get a higher quality foam bed compared to the pocket sprung one you've seen.

That said for £200 you will struggle to get any where near the quality that will last at best you're looking at a bed for 1-3 years at this price point before dipping and sagging.

My advice on the support is to try out medium to firm beds and see which you prefer.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We often find that people with bad backs actually need more comfort, ie sink, in the bed than just pure support so look for foam or polyester comfort layers in the descriptions.

This is where a foam mattress may suit you better.

I hope that helps.

Kind Regards Gary
