Vispring elite firm vs medium

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

Hi would value some advice on whether the Vispring elite firm tension is ok for us

- I am 65-70 kg (1,73 height) and my wife 55kg (1,68 height)

- we bought an ottoman bed with a Vispring elite firm matress

- we tried a medium in store and found it too soft

- however when it was delivered they said it’s way too firm for us and now we are worried

- we went again in store today and again felt the medium was a bit too soft but the salesperson said long term it may cause issues

- would value any advice. We are on day 4 so have 3-4 weeks to keep trialing the mattress but some advice based on expertise is very welcome

thank you

Hi Alex,

Thank you for your question. When considering a new mattress, you should take into account your sleep positions and comfort preferences, as these will determine which comfort layers would be the most suitable. Your height and body weight should determine which spring tension will provide you with the correct level of support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

At the heights and body weights you have provided, we would pair you with the medium spring tension to provide you both with the correct support. This spring tension supports body weights up to 105 kg, whilst the firm spring tension supports body weights between 107 kg and 140 kg. Neither of you weighs enough to activate the firm spring tension. The main job of the pocket spring is to move with you to keep your spine aligned as you move from one spring to another. If the springs are not active, you are not supported. You essentially have a tabletop of wire with some upholstery layers for cushioning on top.

With a traditional pocket sprung mattress, it is the upholstery layers on top of the springs that determine how the mattress feels. The Vispring Elite mattress has wool and cotton in the upholstery layers, which are the softest fibres used in mattresses that wick away heat and moisture quicker than any other fibre. This is ideal for side sleepers who require cushioning for their shoulders and hips to sink into. Front and back sleepers may find this too soft as sinking in too much in these positions can cause lower back and neck pain. If you prefer a firmer mattress, you should consider a different model with either medium or firm upholstery layers.

Upholstery Layer Fibre Type How it will feel?
Polyester Synthetic Soft
White Fibre Synthetic Soft/Medium
Recycled Fibre / Eco Fibre Synthetic Medium
Memory Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Igel / Hybrid Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Polycotton Synthetic/Natural Blend Soft/Medium
Linen Synthetic/Natural Blend Medium
Wool (Pure) Natural Soft/Medium
Cotton (Pure) Natural Soft
Silk Natural Soft
Horsehair Natural Medium
Mohair Natural Medium/Firm
Hemp Natural Medium
Latex (100% Natural) Natural Medium/Firm
Coir Natural Firm
Flax Natural Firm
Coarse Cashmere Natural Firm
Bamboo Natural Super Soft
Horsetail Natural Firm
Alpaca Natural Soft
Cashmere (Pure) Natural Soft
Vicuna Natural Super Soft

When you try a mattress in a showroom, you do not get a true representation of how the mattress will feel, as the upholstery layers have already been softened by many potential customers. The Vispring mattresses, except for the bedstead range, like our Artisan range, have been designed for a pocket sprung base, which cushions the mattress. The Vispring Elite mattress you tried with the medium spring tension would have been on this type of base. Your ottoman base will firm up the internal support of the spring slightly. I would recommend trying the medium spring tension again, but ask the store assistants to put the mattress on a platform base, which will replicate how the support will feel on your base and see if this is still too soft. If so, then the upholstery layers are not right for you, as well as the springs.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
