What mattress for a 6.5 stone female side sleeper?

Can you recommend a mattress for me - I am a petite 5ft tall, 6.5 stone adult side sleeper with hip joint and lower back pain? I currently have a sprung single mattress which feels firm and unforgiving despite having created a makeshift topper from 2 lightweight duvets, one on top of another to see if it improved the feel. Ideally I would like a mattress with good airflow so it doesn't get too hot, and one that is compatible with me turning a lot during the night. I have a wooden slatted bed frame. Thank you.

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The main consideration when choosing a new mattress is body weight and this is because this will determine the spring tension/feel most appropriate for that weight. In your case, you are quite light weight and so we would suggest that the best spring tension for you would be soft, however, you could opt for medium with soft upholstery layers, which is our Origins Comfort 1000. This has a standard medium spring unit with soft upholstery layers suitable for someone like you who is a side sleeper.

Alternatively, if your budget permits, you could view the Artisan Luxury, which has soft upholstery layers and can have the spring tension selected as soft, medium or firm as required. This mattress is the softest in the Artisan range, is suitable for side sleepers and has entirely natural upholstery. None of the products referred to herein contain upholstery which is likely to make you overheat.

You may also find that you need to add a mattress topper in order to introduce an additional comfort layer at your body weight as even a soft upholstery might still be too firm for you by itself.

If you intend to use your mattress on a slatted base, we would always advocate placing some form of barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF between the slats and the mattress. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and avoid ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

We trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419,

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
