What mattress for heavier side sleeper wanting a soft feel?

We are looking for a new mattress/bed and want a nice soft feel but with a medium tension. One of us is a side sleeper (the heavier one) and the other sleeps various ways.

Our current mattress is a Harrison Cherry 5270? and is a split tension (soft and medium). The heavier one is on the soft side at the moment as they feel their shoulder doesn’t “sink” into the mattress properly and is always in pain.

Any advice will be gratefully received

Hi John,

Many thanks for your question for a mattress recommendation to replace a Harrison Cherry 5270 mattress.

Given this mattress uses layers of micro springs this may be the problem with your shoulders not sinking when you sleep on your side. Side sleepers need a softer set of mattress upholstery than say a back or front sleeper. When micro springs are used they are added in lieu of upholstery. We don't use them as they compress so quickly it makes them pretty much useless. We prefer more upholstery and a substantial pocket spring unit over layer upon layer of tiny springs. We find them useless in our opinion.

The Harrisons Cherry 5750 which is no longer available gives the following specification:

  • RRP: £2099 Feb 2013.
  • The Cherry features a layer of Revolution pocket springs and two layers of superbly responsive HD springs working together to provide a total of 5250 springs within the mattress.
  • Support, comfort and temperature regulation are provided by layers of natural wool, cotton and mohair blends.

Sadly there's no discernable information about the spring gauge or tension. We note you have a soft/med split. Soft springs are really only recommended for sleepers under 8 stone. Anything heavier than this and they completely compress leading to lack of support and potential mattress issues. There's also no GSM given for the fibres which is frustrating as you can't see how much or little that mattress contains!

We would advise you have a one-piece medium 1.4 gauge pocket spring but focus your efforts on softer top sleeping layers. These are the comfort layers that will take the pressure off your shoulders. It may be the lack of support in your current Harrisons mattress that's causing you some of the pressure issues too!
