Which mattress can I use with a sprung slatted base?
Can I use the Origins Pocket 1500 mattress on a sprung slatted bed base? I have a cover over the top of the slats.
Thank you for your help
Hi June,
Thanks for getting in touch asking about sprung slat bases and mattress suitability.
The quick answer is that any quality mattress should be suitable to go on top of a sprung slatted base. However, there are a few things you need to consider.
The first thing is to make sure that the gaps between the slats are no more than 2 inches apart. This is because a wider gap can cause settlement issues and dips in your mattress over time. This is because these wider gaps cause the mattress to bulge between them after a period. The best way to address this is to use some thin MDF or plyboard to stop this. It sounds like the cover on top is partly addressing this. A old duvet cover on top of slats can help prevent slats from nipping and snagging a mattress.
The other thing to bear in mind is that a slatted base will always feel firmer than a sprung edge divan base. So will make a mattress feel slightly firmer than if it was on a pocket sprung base. Most pocket sprung bases are paired with high-end models, and lower entry-level models are nearly always designed for a platform top divan or slatted base.
The Origins Pocket 1500 would be fine on this base based on the above and would give you a medium feel in the top upholstery layer. There's some more detail below about the mattress.
