Which mattress for correct support
I am so confused with all the mattresses available! We used to have a Sealy Posturepedic but it was a little hard, so when we looked for a new mattress we went for the Hypnos Saunderton from Land of Beds. My husband at the time had broken ribs and he said this was the comfiest. At first it was fine but I can feel every movement he makes and when he gets into bed I sometimes have to hold onto the edge of the mattress so I don't roll to the middle. There is a "ridge" in the middle where neither of us lie. I suffer from spinal osteoarthritis, both cervical and lumbar and we are both side sleepers. Hubby weighs 92kg and myself 96kg so need a good mattress. Help!!
Hi Julie,
Thank you for your question. Your Hypnos Saunderton mattress from Land Of Beds is a pillowtop mattress with soft upholstery layers. This mattress contains layers of British Wool, Cotton and Solotex. Solotex is a polyester material that provides a luxurious cushioning fibre that promotes airflow, which in turn adds to the softness and will help with shape retention. We do not sell or recommend this type of mattress, as you can not prolong the lifespan of the mattress by regularly turning the mattress over. With a two sided mattress that has upholstery layers on both sides of the springs, the upholstery layers have time to rest and regain loft. When you can only rotate a mattress, your hips tend to be in the same place, which means this area doesn't get any rest time. It is always better to have a two sided mattress and a separate mattress topper. Both parts are then fully turnable, and once the topper reaches the end of its life, you can just replace this instead of the whole mattress.

A ridge develops in the middle of the mattress, especially in larger sizes, as no one sleeps in the middle. The upholstery layers settle where you lie the most, which they are supposed to do; however, this leaves the surrounding areas like new. This then looks like the mattress has sagged, but this is not the case; it just has uneven settlement. It is similar to a three seater sofa, and only sitting on the two outside seats, the middle seat will feel firmer and may even look higher as it hasn't been used. If you are in bed on your own, sleep in the middle, or if you are in bed alone watching TV or reading a book, sit in the middle. By doing this, you will settle the middle of the mattress to a level similar to your sleep area.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
At your body weights, we would pair you both with the medium spring tension for the correct level of support. This will allow your body to find its own level and not be forced into an unnatural position. Pocket springs, unlike open coil springs, are individual springs placed in their own pockets and should reduce motion disturbance as only the springs you are lying on are active and the surrounding springs don't move. As you are suffering from motion transfer, a zip and link mattress may be beneficial.
I would recommend a medium level of comfort, such as the Artisan Naturals, which has cushioning in the top layer and more supportive layers underneath. If this is a little too firm, adding a separate mattress topper will replicate the feel of a pillowtop mattress and provide additional comfort.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
