Which mattress for sleepers 9st and 14st Zip & link
My husband and I currently have a double bed, which I am increasingly finding too small. I am 5 foot and around 9 stone, and he is 5 foot 11 and just under 14 stone. Historically, my husband has had sciatica and I have recently had shoulder pain. We are both side sleepers. One of the main issues is that I am a very light sleeper and any movement wakes me up. If my husband turns over, I feel as if I am being catapulted to the ceiling! On this basis, a zip and link seems ideal, but we only have room for a king. Does this give enough sleeping room with a zip and link? And which mattress in your range would you advise? I generally prefer softer upholstery and my husband firmer.
Hi,
Thank you for contacting us regarding a kingsize zip & link mattress.
A kingsize zip & link mattress will provide you both with two separate mattresses which are each 2ft 6in wide x 6ft 6in in length.
As you are feeling movement within your existing mattress, if this is causing a problem and you are a light sleeper and sensitive to movement, the only way to stop this is with a zip & link mattress as they are two separate mattresses that are then zipped together to make an overall mattress size.
When choosing a new mattress, you need to consider not only receiving the correct support but also the correct level of comfort. The support is provided by the internal spring unit and is dictated by body weight and height. At your body weights and heights, you both require a medium spring tension which will provide you both with the correct level of support. The comfort is provided by the upholstery fillings which are on top of those springs. As you are both side sleepers, you do require cushioning for shoulders and hips so as to avoid pressure pain in those areas.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
A zip & link mattress can be made with differing level of support however all the upholstery fillings on top of those springs will be exactly the same. It is not possible to make a zip & link mattress with different levels of comfort. The only way around this would be to come to a compromise on something overall medium and then add a mattress topper to your side to soften it down further for you. Medium upholstery means the mattress will feel neither too soft nor too firm.
We make two ranges of Pocket Sprung mattresses each having a medium mattress within those Ranges. The Origins Range contain more man made fibres and in this Range I would recommend looking at the Origins Pocket 1500 which contains a layer of wool together with those man made fibres providing an overall medium level of comfort and support. In the Artisan Range I would recommend looking at the Artisan Naturals with a medium spring tension for support.
As your husband suffers with sciatica, it used to be advised that people with back problems needed to have a firm mattress. However advice has now changed and it is about receiving the correct level of support together with the correct level of comfort. We have spoken with customers who have suffered from sciatica and the last thing you need is a mattress that is so firm you are literally lying on the top of it with no cushioning. All this will do is to exacerbate the problem.
I hope the above is of assistance to you however please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team for more tailored advice on 0161 437 4419.
Regards Julie
