Which mattress should replace our ancient Vi-Spring Regal?

Our last two kingsize beds have both been Vi-spring. The first an Earl de Luxe matress and sprung edge divan from And so to Bed (1986), and the most recent a Regal Firm Tension Divan Set from Harrods (1997).
We tried replacing the mattress (retaining the sprung base) with a John Lewis Natural Collection Linen 6000 Medium tension (on special purchase a couple of months ago), but that didn't work at all for either of us (especially my husband) .
He is 6ft tall and weighs 14 st,a side sleeper who likes to 'feel supported''. I am 5ft 6in and just under 10 st, front/side sleeper and rely on the topper to provide a touch more comfort. Whilst he would consider purchasing another Vi-Spring mattress, I baulk at the price and would be interested in which mattress you would recommend.

Hi Caroline

Thanks for your question.

We do have a model in our range that gives a  similar to the Vi Spring Regal Superb you have been used to, this is the Artisan Bespoke 004, if you look at the table below you will see a layer for layer break down and description against the Vi Spring comparison.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Bespoke 004 Vi Spring Regal Superb
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton 900gsm Blended real Shetland Isle Fleece Wool and Cotton
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 200gsm Soft Bamboo NA
4 1200gsm Pure Horsetail 1200gsm long stranded Horsetail blended with British Fleece Wool
5 1000gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton 1000gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
6 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [ 49mm ] [1.28mm] 1720 Calico encased Pocket Springs [48mm ] [1.28mm]
Total GSM 3600 gsm 3100 gsm

I would also recommend that you take a look at the Artisan Bespoke mattress in our range. This has the firmer feel upholstery compared to the slightly softer more medium feel upholstery in the Artisan Bespoke 004. Please see the table below for a layer by layer break down comparison to the Vi Spring Herald.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Bespoke Vi-Spring Herald Superb
1 500gsm British Wool 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool & Cotton
2 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton NA
3 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
4 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
5 1200gsm Horsehair 1200gsm Horsehair
6 1000gsm White Cashmere Insulator 1000gsm British Fleece Wool
7 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [49mm] [1.28mm] 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [Gauge: 1.42mm]
Total GSM 5100gsm 3400gsm

As you like a firmer feel this would give you that, but at your heights and body weights, you should both be using a medium tension spring, a pocket spring needs to move when you move to do it's job properly, a firm spring needs a starting weight of 16.5 st to 17 st to be able to push down, and make an impression in the spring unit.

So the Artisan Bespoke mattress in a medium tension spring would give you both the correct support for your heights and weights but the firmer feel in the top upholstery layers that you prefer.

If you require any further assistance please call the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Amy.
