I weigh 102kg and my partner weighs 125kg,(she on weight loss ideal target 85kg only her though lol)we both sleep on our backs and sides, we both also have back pain and shoulder pain due to our current mattress . My partner does move a lot due to feeling hot sometimes. We want to invest in a quality long term use mattress that also addresses these issues. Moreover bed base is equally important to us. What do you advise.

Hi Kobby,

Thank you for your question regarding a new mattress. Without knowing what your current mattress is, it is difficult to say with certainty what is causing the issues. The shoulder pain you are experiencing would indicate that the mattress is too firm for you when sleeping on your side.

Artisan bespoke 004 mattress

Mattresses that contain natural fibres provide a cooler sleep surface and help you to regulate your body temperature. Natural fibres are also more durable than synthetic fibres, making the lifespan of the mattress much longer. Given your sleep positions, I would recommend a medium level of comfort, such as the Artisan Bespoke 004 and the Artisan Naturals, which have cushioning in the top layers for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your sides but more supportive layers underneath so that you do not sink in too much when sleeping on your backs.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The support from the mattress is provided by the spring tension, and this is dictated by your height and body weight to provide the correct level of support. The medium spring tension supports body weights up to 17 stone, depending on your height, and the firm spring tension supports body weights between 17 stone and 23 stone, also depending on your height. Your height should be taken into account as a taller person's body weight is distributed over a larger surface area than a shorter person's.

As your partner is currently on her weight loss journey, it may be beneficial to postpone purchasing a new mattress until she is at least halfway towards her goal. I recommend waiting to purchase your new mattress for support reasons. Currently, your partner requires a firm spring tension to provide her with the correct level of support; however, once her body weight is below 100kg, this will then be too supportive for her. You could order the medium spring tension now; however, your partner would not be supported, and it could cause further back pain and damage the internal spring units. Adding a natural fibre mattress topper would provide additional cushioning and help your partner regulate her body temperature in the meantime.

The type of base you put a mattress on can affect the overall feel of a mattress. We pair our Artisan range of natural fibre mattresses with the Artisan pocket sprung base, which cushions the mattress. I would recommend the Contemporary platform base, which will firm up the internal support slightly, giving the mattress a more supportive feel.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
