Which replacement mattress is right for us?
Hi, are looking to change our existing mattress; a zip-link, Superking, John Lewis SB 12000 Yorkshire Wool, medium spring. It is now nearly 8 years old and starting to feel too soft.
We spent a lot of time choosing it after I had back surgery and it has served us both well.
This year we hired a cottage in Norfolk and slept on your Pocket Reflex 1000 mattress and found it really comfortable.
It would offer us a less expensive option than making a direct replacement, which is attractive, but we have not dealt with you before so it’s a bit of a leap of faith.
Please could you help with a couple of questions:
- changing from a 12000 spring to a 1000 spring set up is worrying….what are your thoughts?
- we would like to stay with the zip-link set up as we’re not getting any younger and the weight is of concern. We also get less disturbance when the other person is moving. The mattress in Norfolk was a single unit double, so we are concerned that two single mattresses would be even firmer than the one full unit.
- the mattress in Norfolk was probably on the limit of our acceptance regarding firmness, so maybe we need to step down a level or even have one firm (for me) and one medium (I am 6’2” and 13stone, my wife is 5’5” and 10 stone)
- we would prefer not to have to turn the mattress
We are open to your suggestions and appreciate the trial period you offer for evaluating the mattress.
Mike & Tracey
Hi Mike,
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, it seems that your current mattress has been discontinued. This makes it difficult to make a comparison. The wool upholstery fibres are one of the softest fibres used in mattresses. This is supported by thousands of micro HD springs, which greatly inflates the spring count, giving the mattress, at a guess, a soft to medium overall feel. We do not use this type of spring as they offer nothing in terms of support, but they do take up space where the upholstery layers should be.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The spring tension is specifically designed to match the level of support based on your unique heights and body weights. This means that the firmness and responsiveness of the springs are calibrated to ensure that your spine is properly aligned while you sleep, providing you with both with the correct level of support.
The Origins Reflex 1000 mattress has a firmer medium overall level of comfort in the upholstery layers. A zip and link mattress would feel slightly firmer than the double mattress that you slept on, when settled, due to the smaller surface area between the piping. This is a two-sided mattress that will require turning over once a month for the first twelve months and then every two to three months thereafter. If the mattress is not turned over, the upholstery layers will not last the full term of the manufacturer's warranty.

The only mattress within our range that doesn't require turning over is the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 mattress, which features a high-quality latex comfort layer. This unique material is known for its exceptional ability to conform to the shape of your body, providing tailored support and comfort. Unlike traditional upholstery materials, latex has a natural resilience that allows it to distribute weight evenly across the mattress surface. This means that as pressure is applied, the latex will adapt and contour to your body’s curves, helping to alleviate pressure points and promote better spinal alignment during sleep. It's important to note that the feel of the mattress can vary depending on your body weight. For individuals with a lighter body weight, the mattress may feel firmer, as there is less pressure exerted on the latex, resulting in a more resilient surface. Conversely, those with a heavier body weight will experience a softer feel, as their weight allows the latex to compress and cradle the body more deeply. This mattress would have a medium level of comfort for you and a firmer medium overall feel for your wife.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
