Which soft mattress

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

Hello,

I am looking to buy a new mattress after returning a Simba Hybrid Pro which has left me with terrible hip pain after 4 weeks of use. I am now sleeping on the sofa.

I am 5ft 4 and weigh 50-55kg and now understand after studying your website that I need a softer spring tension and comfort layers. I do have a tendency to hip pain, probably due to bursitis or gluteal tendonopathy.

I live in Northern Ireland and there is a very limited range of soft mattresses that I can try locally. The best options so far are:

Harrison Spinks Emerald 16500 seasonal turn

Hypnos Wool origins 8 (although I think that might be medium)

Vispring (can't remember model)

I am worried about making another expensive mistake and making my hip problem worse. I would appreciate your expert advice.

Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, we only deliver to the UK mainland. We can deliver to any manned port within the UK and you would need to arrange the forward shipping. Likewise, if the mattress needed to be returned for any reason, it would be your responsibility to return it to the UK, which can become quiet costly.

When looking for a new mattress, you should consider your sleep positions and comfort preferences to determine how the comfort layers should feel. We would not recommend firm upholstery layers for a side sleeper, for instance, as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  If a mattress is too firm and causing pain, a mattress topper can provide additional comfort and cushioning for those areas that push into the upholstery.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Your body weight and height will determine which spring tension will provide the correct level of support. We discontinued the soft spring tensions some time ago as many customers of very light body weights were returning the mattresses as they found they were not supportive enough. We would pair you with the medium spring tension within our ranges.

Unfortunately, not many manufacturers or retailers provide the GSM of the upholstery layers within their mattresses, which can make it quite difficult to determine how a mattress will feel. The Harrison Spinks Emerald 16500 mattress contains layers of British wool, which is a soft fibre, blended with Hemp and Flax, which are more supportive fibres, the overall feel would depend on how much of each fibre is combined with the softer layers. I would estimate that this mattress has a soft to medium level of comfort. At your very light body weight, the upholstery layers would probably feel more medium as you would make little impression into the upholstery layers. This mattress also contains layers of micro HD springs,  which we do not recommend these springs as they offer nothing in support but do take up space where more luxurious upholstery layers, such as horsehair, could be. This mattress is available with 4 different spring tensions.

The Hypnos Wool Origins 8 mattress has 8 fleeces of wool and a layer of Swaledale wool, which will give a soft cushioning overall feel, however, this mattress is only available with either a medium or firm spring tension.

Vispring offers a number of different soft upholstery mattresses which cater to all budgets, from the cheaper Vispring Elite to the Vispring Devonshire, and they have a soft spring tension. I would recommend trying a Vispring Elite mattress with a soft spring tension. Please bear in mind that mattresses in showrooms will always feel softer as they have been bounced around on by many potential customers and already settled the upholstery layers.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
