Will latex mattress be suitable for elderly parents?

A customer asked

I urgently need to buy a replacement mattress for my elderly parents - I'm thinking 100% latex?

Their new sprung divan & pocket mattress is only 2-3 yrs old & has been an extremely expensive failure. The mattress Is too high & the edge has sagged alarmingly where they sit on rising/retiring. To get the correct overall bed height, I'm looking for a 20cm approx mattress to get the right overall height. Dunlopillo is useless at the moment because Relyon (the new D. supplier as of last week, apparently) know nothing about their new range & haven't even got a website up yet. My parents both weigh about 12.5 stone. What do you suggest?

Hi Diane,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Unfortunately dunlopillo is in fact changing hands and, I'm told, completely relaunching their products.

Latex is a fantastic mattress material for pressure relief but not so much for firm edge support. If you're looking for a firm edge to the mattress however its not the best material as you only get a firm edge if you include other materials such as firm foam or edge support which then negates the true benefit of a solid core piece of latex. Latex will sag on the edge when you sit on it as it works as a once piece material. If you sit on the edge you simply dont have enough latex to provide support. It also is designed to be laid upon ie the entire piece of latex support your entire weight spread out, not concentrated on an edge. Only a part latex part foam mattress will provide this firmer edge, but theres compression and sagging issues when you mix synthetic foam with Natural Latex which compresses and ages at different rates.

Confused?!

I bet.

If you need a firm edge I'd recommend our origins latex pocket sprung traditional mattress. It will be a medium feel but have the fimer edge.

John Ryan By Design Origins Latex
1 300 gsm Wool Silk blend pad
2 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
3 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
4 One inch HD Foam
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

I wouldnt recommend a solid core latex with a firm edge for the mixing of synthetic foam reasons above.

In a quality springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring this firm edge is made in a far better method that will last.
