Mattresses for Front Sleepers From John Ryan by Design

Finding the right mattress for your sleeping position

At John Ryan By Design, we live and breathe mattresses. But we know not everyone has the time to get into the nitty gritty of what goes into every mattress. So we’ve done all the research, all the testing and gathered all the relevant information for you. Mattress jargon can be a bit overwhelming and frustrating, so we try and break it down into plain English so you can make an informed decision.

To find the perfect mattress for you, it’s helpful to understand which position you sleep in. Getting into a comfortable position is a massive part of getting a good night’s sleep. And we all have our own way of sleeping; whether it’s on our back with one leg sticking out of the covers or with a mountain of pillows propping us up on our side.

Identifying which type of sleeper you are will give you a better idea of the type of mattress you’ll need, as certain mattresses are better at giving you a good night’s rest.

A small percentage of the population are actually known as front sleepers – people who sleep on their stomach. And whilst not many people regularly sleep this way, it’s still important that those who do can find the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

What’s the best mattress for front sleepers?

If you’re a front sleeper, you’ll tend to need more support than side sleepers because of the sensitivity of your pressure points and the risk of misaligning your spine. A stomach sleeper mattress with good support will distribute your weight evenly and won’t put extra pressure on your back.

Stomach sleepers need to find a mattress that combines resistance with comfort. With that in mind, you should look for a firmer mattress than, say, a side sleeper. This will help maintain your natural alignment and leave you feeling well rested by the time morning comes around.

A firmer mattress is great for stomach sleepers as your body won’t sink into the mattress too much. A soft mattress may cause a front sleeper to sink too far into the top comfort layers, and whilst it might feel quite comfy at first, over time it will result in overarching the natural curve of your spine, causing and pain and discomfort in the long run.

However, if the mattress is too firm, it will mean your back won’t be able to relax enough to fall into its natural curve – which can also cause discomfort. So it’s important to get front sleeper mattresses right.

Pocket sprung mattresses for stomach sleepers

Pocket sprung mattresses are an ideal solution for those who sleep on their front. This is because they distribute your weight evenly, containing individual springs cushioned in their own pockets of material to provide a supportive foundation for your pressure points. They are far more responsive than Foam or those boxed ‘Next Gen’ Memory Foam mattresses, as each spring can react independently. Foam reacts as one large piece and is incredibly slow to react, leaving you in discomfort (in some instances).

Pocket sprung mattresses provide a high level of support, making them suitable for people of all body sizes and ideal mattresses for stomach sleepers. Pocket sprung mattresses are of a far higher quality than both cage sprung and open coil, simply because of how they’re built and the extra support and comfort they provide. Cage sprung and open coil are the cheapest and crudest of spring units, again reacting as one large area, rather than independently.

In our pocket sprung collection we have the choice between luxury pocket sprung man made mattresses and luxury pocket sprung natural fibre mattresses.
