Bedding FAQ

What makes this different from the Hotel Quality Dual Layer Topper?

This topper offers simpler single layer construction with even more generous 1200gsm filling at more accessible pricing, whilst the Hotel Quality Dual Layer features two distinct layers (supportive base plus comfort top) with zipper separation for washing. The Microfibre 10cm topper provides straightforward plush cushioning ideal for budget-conscious enhancement, whereas the Dual Layer offers more sophisticated performance with separate support and comfort characteristics. Both are 9-10cm deep, but the Microfibre cannot be separated for washing, so you’ll need larger capacity machines or professional cleaning for thorough maintenance.

Will 10cm depth be too much for my bed?

At 10cm, this is a substantial topper that will noticeably raise your sleeping surface and add considerable plushness. Consider whether your fitted sheets have sufficient depth to accommodate both your mattress and the additional 10cm. You’ll likely need extra deep fitted sheets (we recommend 38cm depth minimum). The generous depth is excellent for revitalising tired mattresses or adding significant softness to firm surfaces, but ensure your bedding can accommodate the increased height before purchasing.

How does 1200gsm filling compare to standard toppers?

The 1200gsm fill weight is genuinely generous compared to budget toppers that typically use 400-600gsm. This substantially higher fill density means more cushioning, better loft retention, and longer-lasting comfort. Cheaper toppers with minimal filling compress quickly and lose effectiveness within months. The 1200gsm specification provides that plush, cloud-like feel that remains comfortable through years of regular use rather than flattening disappointingly after brief periods.

Is microfibre as good as natural fills?

Microfibre offers different characteristics than natural fills like wool or down. It’s hypoallergenic, considerably more affordable, and machine washable without special care requirements. The cloud-like softness appeals to many sleepers who want plush cushioning. However, microfibre is less breathable than natural fibres, so there is some heat retention compared to wool or cotton alternatives. For most sleepers in moderate climates prioritising value and easy care, microfibre performs admirably. If you sleep very warm or have invested in natural fibre mattresses specifically for breathability, natural fill toppers would be more appropriate.

Will this revitalise my old mattress?

If your mattress remains structurally sound (no significant sagging, broken springs, or damaged edges) but has lost comfort over years of use, this topper can effectively restore sleeping quality. The 10cm depth with generous 1200gsm filling creates a fresh comfort layer that intercepts your body weight before it reaches the compressed materials beneath. However, toppers cannot correct structural mattress problems like broken springs or substantial sagging. If your mattress has genuine structural issues, replacement is necessary rather than adding toppers.

How do I secure this to deep mattresses?

The elasticated corner straps stretch around each corner of your mattress, tucking underneath to hold the topper in place. Whilst not as generous as the 35cm straps on our Hotel Quality topper, these straps accommodate standard mattress depths adequately. For our deepest handmade mattresses (33-36cm), the straps may feel taut. Measure your mattress depth before ordering. If you have particularly deep mattresses, the Hotel Quality topper with 35cm straps securing to bases up to 22 inches might be more suitable.

Can I wash this topper at home?

Machine washable, yes, but the 10cm depth filled with 1200gsm material creates substantial bulk when wet. You’ll need a large capacity domestic machine (typically 9kg drum or larger) or professional cleaning service. Unlike our Hotel Quality Dual Layer topper that separates via zipper for easier washing, this single construction topper must be washed as one piece. Many customers opt for professional cleaning annually whilst using mattress protectors to maintain hygiene between deep cleans. Regular airing in sunshine helps maintain freshness between washes.

Will this make me sleep hot?

Microfibre provides less breathability than natural fibres, so there is some heat retention. The smooth microfibre casing doesn’t wick moisture as effectively as cotton or wool either. For most sleepers in moderate climates, this isn’t problematic, particularly in autumn, winter, and spring. If you naturally sleep very warm, experience night sweats, or live in hot climates, you might find the microfibre uncomfortably warm during summer months. Consider whether temperature management or plush comfort takes priority in your specific circumstances.

How does this compare to memory foam toppers?

Microfibre provides immediate plush cushioning without the sinking sensation and slow response of memory foam. You get cloud-like softness that responds quickly when you move, rather than the contouring embrace foam provides. Microfibre also sleeps cooler than memory foam, which notoriously retains heat. The choice depends on preference: memory foam offers pressure-relieving contour, whilst microfibre provides traditional plush softness with better temperature management and easier maintenance. Microfibre is also considerably more affordable than quality memory foam.

Is this suitable for side sleepers?

The substantial 10cm depth with 1200gsm filling provides excellent cushioning for side sleepers who often experience pressure points at shoulders and hips. The plush microfibre conforms sufficiently to relieve these pressure areas whilst maintaining enough support to prevent excessive sink that could cause spinal misalignment. Side sleepers typically benefit from softer sleeping surfaces, and this topper delivers that softness effectively. However, ensure your underlying mattress still provides adequate support; toppers enhance comfort but cannot create support where the mattress beneath lacks it.

No, and no showroom or retailer sells our products. This is part of the reason why our prices can be so competitive: our internet-based company model allows us to avoid passing the excessive costs of other retailers on to our customers. Most staff within showrooms are also not bed experts (unlike our own in-house team). Sadly, such staff probably wouldn’t understand mattress manufacture to the extent that they could reliably answer your questions. To give you confidence in our way of doing things, our 60-day “love it or return it” guarantee offers the ability to return a mattress that doesn’t suit you for a full refund, or you can perform a one-time exchange and swap to an alternative model.
