Can The Style of Your Bedroom Improve Your Sleep Quality?

At John Ryan, we know how important aesthetic is when it comes to our luxury mattresses, as well as crafting them from the finest fibres and materials, we ensure that they always look as good as they feel. We also know that the look of your bedroom is just as vital, and that the style and feel of your sleeping environment can have a big impact on the quality of your sleep.

Our bedrooms can often get neglected when it comes to interior design, as we tend to focus our decorating and design energies on more ‘public’ areas of the home, like the living room and kitchen. The idea of using decor to promote better sleep may seem like a strange concept, but it’s all too easy to underestimate the difference it can make.

If your bedroom is in need of a refresh, then we’ve got some helpful advice and tips to enhance its design, leaving you to get on with some soothing stylish snoozing…

Use the calming effects of colour

Colour can be crucial when it comes to feeling warm, relaxed and comforted in your bedroom. Much like your choice of tailored mattress, your sleeping space is deeply personal, and you need a perfect palette to reflect that. The colour of your bedroom will certainly affect your mood, so it’s important to stick with only a few. Blues, greens, yellows and oranges can all evoke feelings of relaxation and calmness. Consider going further and using textured wall coverings, such as silk or linen to create an even more effective warming and cosier atmosphere to aid sleep.

Feel better with fresh air

No one wants their bedroom to feel stuffy, especially if you’re a hot sleeper looking to stay cool at night. Unfortunately many of us fall into the habit of keeping our bedroom windows closed all the time, mainly to keep out any noise. But it’s really worth opening them up, even if it’s just for short periods of time during the day. Obviously this depends on the season, but getting fresh air circulating around your bedroom can be really helpful.

Neutralise any external noise

Speaking of noise, it’s important to consider making efforts to reduce the amount of external noise you have coming into the bedroom, as this can allow you to drift off faster. If your bedroom is in a particularly noisy part of your home, where the floors creak loudly for example, then you can take steps to soften the noise. Consider using floor-length curtains to soak up the sound, put down an area rug, or even plump up your pillow collection as these can act as sound absorbing sponges. Also, upholstered furniture in the bedroom, like a chair or sofa, can help to dampen any noise.

Smell that soothing aroma

Never underestimate the power of smell, as the olfactory response is actually directly linked to the emotional center of your brain. The right subtle scent can cause a wave of warmth and relaxation to wash over you with a simple sniff. So, if the predominant scent in your sleep environment is the smell of the overflowing washing basket, this needs to change. Use aromatherapy and pure essential oils in the bedroom, as they can help trigger feelings of calmness, and even relieve stress.

Purify your bedroom with a plant

Another style choice to your bedroom that can really improve the quality of your sleep is simply adding beautiful flowers and plants to it. Not only will these look fantastic and add vitality to your sleeping environment, but they also come with great calming and purifying benefits. They will help to oxygenate the room, and the ritual of watering them before bed can help you switch off and relax. Plants such as Jasmine, Lavender or Aloe Vera are a good place to start, as they can all help to promote a healthy sleeping pattern.

Create a soothing space with effective lighting

Even when you’ve nailed your bedroom decor, you still need to think about the lighting of your sleep space. If the lighting is too bright and harsh in the evening it can seriously interfere with your circadian rhythm, and sleep cycle. Consider making your lights dimmable, because low-level lighting can be more ambient, atmospheric, and enhance the mood of your bedroom. Always aim for a warm light, such as an orange glow, as this will immediately make the space feel more relaxing.

Remember, one of the most important things you can do for your sleep is to choose the right high-quality, luxurious pocket sprung mattress, which can provide you with the most comforting, satisfying and soothing sleep experience you deserve. Once you’ve got your bed sorted you can build everything else in your bedroom around it.
