TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Avoiding a dipping mattress

Gill asked
25th April 2015

Good morning
I hope you can help us. My husband (12st and 5’6″) and I (11st and 5’3″) have a 6′ x6’3″ zip and link bed set with a platform base and have had no fewer than 5 bed sets and/or mattresses in the past 10 years, most quite expensive, yet are still having painful nights. The trouble is every single mattress seems to dip and compress where we lie, the last one dipped after just one night! And it is this dip that seems to cause the pain. We like a firm mattress but have been using a memory foam mattress topper recently o try and even out the surface – without much success!
My husband has had spinal surgery in the past and I suffer from both lower and upper back pain at times, but we seldom seem to have discomfort when sleeping in hotels or on cruise ships. In fact we were considering buying the Sealy Cunarder because we sleep very well in Cunard ships, but I am concerned that the mattress available to the public will not be EXACTLY the same as the ones manufactured for commercial use.
Do you have any suggestions as to which mattress or bed sets would be suitable for us? We are prepared to pay in the region of £2,000 if necessary.

Hi Gill,

I am sorry to hear of your mattress woes, however, I note that you have not advised what spring tension your current mattress is or whether you have been regularly turning and rotating the mattresses.

With all mattresses there is an element of dip, which occurs with use and there are tolerances set for this at around 2-4 cm.

This dipping is usually alleviated in part by regular turning and rotating of the mattress.

The issue of spring tension is important as I would suggest for your body weights that a medium tension is best suited to you both, unless of course you have a specific preference for either soft or firm.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

I would ask that you contact our office to provide the details of your preferred feel, the spring tension of your current mattresses and to confirm if you have been turning and rotating regularly.

We would then be in a better position to advise the most suitable mattress from our ranges.

As far as your fears regarding the Cunarder mattress are concerned, I fear you will probably find that this is only made for Cunard and is not available to the general public.

Kind Regards Gary
