Bensons for beds Connoisseur mattress

Colin asked
5th January 2014

Hello John & Ryan. I am quite a big chap, 17stone. Over the last 15 years I have had several spinal operations which has left me with 3 fusions and a lot of metal and inflexibility. Having trouble sleeping and suffering a lot of pain I have in the last few years paid a lot of money out for “decent” mattresses that I have had advice on, the latest is memory foam (60cm) over springs which I absolutely hate, because of discomfort and heat retention, because I guess of the foam density. Have trawled around lots of bed shops I am not undecided, but like all things anything I find may be the solution is big money, £1500 – £2000, which I can ill afford as I am taking yet another chance with my back as it is. I have seen and laid on one, The medium (No3) Connoisseur mattress in Bensons, a 2200 pocket sprung with a filled topper, specially named for them so I don’t know who makes them. For a double they are asking £899. Have you an equivalent or any other recommendation at a lower price?

Thanks >

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  I am sorry to hear of your frustrations with mattress buying over the years and hopefully, we can offer some resolution.  There are two options I would recommend you look at.  Firstly, the Origins Pocket Latex 1500.  This is a one-sided ‘pillow-top’ mattress with latex as the comfort layer.  Latex is a lot more durable and responsive than memory foam and is not heat retentive.  This retails at £820 for a double mattress and would feel medium to soft for you.

Origins Pocket spring 1500 mattress

Secondly, the Origins Pocket 1500, this is a medium in the comfort layers and retails at £575 for a double mattress.  This can be paired with the latex mattress topper to give you the progressive comfort which should help with your spinal inflexibility.  As the mattress topper takes the brunt of the wear and tear from the person(s) sleeping on the mattress it can always be replaced, cheaper than replacing your mattress.

Both of these mattresses have the option of a firmer spring (2000 spring option) which would provide you with the correct level of support for your body weight.
