Best Mattress For Lower Back Pain

Lauren asked

Hi there I am looking to find out what would be the best mattress for lower back pain. I bought two Emma mattresses for myself and my son in late December and they are giving him back pain and making my back pain worse. They sag in the middle which I did not expect after such a short time. If you can advise which of your mattresses you would recommend for a 22 year old and for myself a 57 year old with lower back pain.
Many thanks

Hi Lauren,

Thank you for your question. A pocket sprung mattress can cause back pain for a few reasons. If the spring tension is not correct for your body weight then you are forced into an unnatural position. If the upholstery layers are not suitable for how you sleep, for example, if the mattress has firm upholstery and you are a side sleeper then you would pivot on your shoulders and hips which puts pressure on your lower back and may also give you pressure pains.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Memory foam works differently and requires both body heat and pressure to be able to mould to you. It retains this heat making the sleeper very hot which is then fed back to the mattress. The warmer memory foam gets the softer it will feel. If you are a back sleeper and the mattress is too soft it raised your ankles and your neck which puts pressure on your lower back and can cause lower back pain. Memory foam can lose its ability to return to its original shape over time.

The advice used to be that anyone with back issues needed a firmer mattress but that is not the case. When choosing a new mattress you should consider which springs will give you the correct support and which upholstery would be the most suitable given your sleep positions and comfort preferences.
