Hi, I am looking at purchasing a Harrison spinks mattress. I like a firm mattress and my wife likes medium. I always sleep on my side and often wake with shoulder ache and dead arms, I weigh 12 stone and my wife 14stone , cannot decide how many springs would be best, tested a few and the pearl 6000 felt more comfortable than their expensive higher spring ones which felt too soft for me. Price is not really an issue. What's advice can you offer ?

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your question.

Purely and simply, the job of the springs is to support you.  The tension of the springs is determined solely on your body weight (not the number of them).   For example, would someone of an 8-9 stone bodyweight need 6000 medium tension springs? Their lightweight frame would be getting the support and comfort from the upholstery alone - thus leaving the high spring count contained practically worthless. Your choice should be based on the requirements of your own particular bodyweights and needs.  Support from the springs should be enough to just give under your respective weights and couple this with your preference of upholstery to offer you the comfort - should equal the perfect mattress.  It seems strange that you concentrated your question on spring counts and no thought about upholstery.  The two should be considered relatively equally.  It is no use having a high spring count with a low level or sufficient amount of upholstery.  At your body weights, you both require a medium spring tension to give you the correct level of support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

It would appear that your current mattress is too firm for you.  As a side sleeper, we wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the comfort layers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  You should be looking for something that is a medium in the comfort layers.  For many people budget is a factor when deciding on which mattress to choose, the closest to what they want that they can afford.  If budget was a factor I would recommend our Origins Pocket 1500 which is a good all-round medium feel mattress.  But as you say price is not an issue, have you tried any of the Vispring range?  I would recommend you try the Vi-Spring Regal Superb, which we have a few comparable mattresses in our Artisan range, like our Artisan Naturals or Artisan Bespoke 004.
