TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Dunlopillo comparison mattress on very low budget

Tony and Kathie asked

Hi there, I’m hoping to join the long list of those you have helped!

We have a knackered, cheap mattress that has now started actually twanging and clanging at times. My partner has some pretty big problems with her back and, increasingly, with other joints and I have a pretty physically demanding job and am getting a bit creaky myself!

Neither of us gets a great nights sleep on our current mattress and often wake up stiff/achey so we are now in need of an upgrade. The problem is, as is often the case I guess, we are poor so have to look for the best blend of economy and comfort!

I was hoping to spend only a couple of hundred quid on a replacement til i started looking at the topic and realised that this was a foolish economy. At the moment we could stretch to around five hundred but if we can put up with our creaking current set up for a while longer we might be able to save a bit and stretch to £750 ish. This would put us in reach of your pocket latex model which is the one I have singled out as our best option if we can afford it but I would like some advice and help to generally unboggle my brain first!

The questions I am hoping you can help with are: What type of mattress would you recommend as the best balance of price to performance for someone with the joint problems my partner suffers (memory foam, latex, etc.)?

If a latex mattress is a viable choice how would your pocket latex compare to Dunlopillo mattresses – I know this is vague but we recently spent the night in a Novotel that had recently been refurbished and both of us noted how comfortable the mattress was but the only info I have been able to find is that it would have probably been a Dunlopillo, 22cm thick mattress – not which model. Would it be an idea to get a decent mattress topper (my knee-jerk preference here would be a down one) to try to nurse some more use out of our current mattress so we can save for a better quality replacement to which we can then transfer the topper?

We have a king size wooden slatted frame – I believe that you favour a solid divan type base but there is no way my partner would ditch our current frame so would it be a good idea to block out the slats with hardboard/thin mdf so it it has a solid flat base?

Finally, the stats on us are that I am 6ft and my partner is 5ft 8 and we both weigh around 13 stone. Both of us tend toward over rather than under heating in bed and I (much to my partner’s chagrin) am a night time sweater – I sleep through being hot and sweating but I understand it is not great for the mattress/bedclothes (and my partner hates it!). Thank you for any help you can provide, Tony/Kathie. >

Hi Tony and Kathie,

Thank you for your question.

Personally, I would try and save for a few months more for The Origins Latex which would no doubt be ideal for your weights and requirements although I cannot guarantee that you will not overheat on this mattress.   We would normally then advise to look at a mattress that has natural fillings but these types of mattresses can be quite expensive.

In the interim period I would be inclined to purchase your toppers in order to squeeze the last bit of life from your current mattress, these will be of use when you come to change and will not be a wasted purchase.

As you mentioned Dunlopillo, it is worth bearing in mind the following points; All Dunlopillo mattresses are described as having “..100% Dunlopillo Latex Core” – This should not be taken as “100% Latex” – The latex Dunlopillo utilise in their mattress is sourced through Latexco – the same company as we source our latex from.

On any Dunlopillo specification we cannot find any reference to blend ratios – ours (Origins Latex) is a 60% natural and 40% synthetic blend.

Looking at the specifications for the Dunlopillo Nouveau mattress as an example (around £1000) , it states that the mattress is non turn – however, it utilises a 22cm solid core latex interior which makes me question if it is solid core why cant it be used both sides?

I hope the above is of assistance to you, but please do not hesitate to contact the office for further information and advice on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
