Tim Selwyn

Hi John Ryan by Design,
My wife and I are looking to replace our bed which is an Emma mattress. Liking the look of the Artisan 1500 natural fibre pocket sprung mattress.

We tried one of the Emma mattresses (hot and sweaty) - so will be returning that and want to go back to a decent pocket sprung bed instead.

Ideally, one that feels as cool as possible, good support but not too firm (don't want it feeling springy). Wife weighs about 8-9 stone; I weigh 12-13 stone.

Suggestions welcome!
Thanks,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

Many thanks for your comment asking about the best cool mattress. Sorry to hear you're not getting on with your Emma mattress. It's not the first complaint we've heard about these types of boxed memory foam mattresses. In fact, we get at least 5 or 6 a week coming into us on our website!

Why is the Emma mattress so warm?

The problem you're encountering is that the Emma mattress is made entirely of synthetic foam. Memory foam and synthetic foam is incredibly heat retentive. Mouldable foams like memory foam are vasco elastic meaning they respond to, retain and build up heat to work properly. So if you're a warm sleeper you really should avoid any of these foam boxed mattresses. They may claim their covers remove heat, but in reality, they do very little to remove the intrinsic heat build up. You're right to look at natural fibres for a far cooler and more responsive nights sleep.

One sided Emma Mattress Issues:

The next issue that has been raised online many times is about the one sided nature of the Emma mattress. The reason it's onesided is often listed as a benefit. This is marketing spin. The reason its one sided is the foams don't allow a two sided mattress or the softer top layers would be crushed and would settle beyond acceptable tolerances if they were made two sided. This is because memory and foams settle far faster than natural fibres or traditional upholstery. Leading to the issue where these mattresses are nearly always one sided.

A one sided mattress means you can't turn it over, so one side of the bed gets all the use. It makes it impossible to even out natural settlement and quite often bodily impressions form in these boxed rolled mattresses very quickly. Just search google and you will see the thousands of complaints and returns based on this. Whenever possible you should be buying a two sided mattress.

Alternatives to the Emma Mattress:

If you're looking for a natural fibre mattress that's two sided and contains significant breathable upholstery layers then our Artisan range is the place to look. One thing to clear up is the issue of spring tension confusion.

When a mattress is listed as soft, medium or firm more often than not retailers are actually referring to the spring tension when they set the comfort grade of mattresses. This is wholly inaccurate as these spring tensions are based on your body weight and not your comfort preference. The comfort feel comes from the upholstery layers on top of the spring unit. Usually, this can be seen from a detailed breakdown of the mattress grams per square meter.

Artisan 1500 Mattress

The Artisan mattress will give you a medium firm feel in the comfort layer and at your bodyweights you are best placed on a 1.4 gauge spring for both of you. It features 4500gsm of fillings a 53% of which are natural fibres. It contains a mix to bring it in at a competitive price point.

Artisan Naturals Mattress

If you're wanting a true medium feel mattress in the comfort layers then the Artisan Naturals is our best seller and for good reason! It features a calico encased vanadium coated pocket spring which is hand-tied, the same as Savoir and Vispring mattress spring support units. It features 3950gsm of 85% natural fibres making it even cooler than the Artisan 1500 and slightly softer given the upholstery profile.

Both of these models can and should be turned every month and will give you many years blissful sleep if looked after Tim.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
