Help finding premier gold orthopaedic ultimate backcare mattress

Allegra asked
18th July 2015

I’m considering new mattresses at the moment. I’m currently moving out of rented accommodation, where my landlords provided the bed and mattress. I have been quite happy with it, and it seemed fine for my back, which other beds sometimes bother. However, I can’t seem to find that brand/model any more (it is probably 15 years old). The label on it says “premier gold orthopaedic ultimate backcare”, and from searching online, I think the brand might have been nestledown, as those seem to come up on some old sites. The mattress is covered in a sort of blue/gold plaid fabric; they probably bought it from a bed supplier, but possible John Lewis. Have you any idea which mattress this might have been, and which of your current mattresses would be the closest match to it? I’m looking for a double mattress, but it is just me sleeping in it. I am medium weight (13 stone) and often have lower back problems, so I thought the orthopaedic ones might be good.

Hi Allegra,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, despite your detailed description of the mattress, I am unable to recommend an alternative from either the general market or our ranges.

It can be quite a minefield trying to decide which kind of mattress is suitable so hopefully we can help eliminate this and make the process easier and enjoyable.  In  order for us to recommend one of our mattresses, we would need to know whether you require a traditional pocket sprung mattress or a foam mattress or a latex mattress.

From the information you have supplied with regard to your weight, if you do require a traditional pocket sprung mattress, I would advise a medium spring tension as this will then give you the support you require.   The firmness of the mattress would then come from the upholstery layers which are all the fillings which are on top of the springs which give you the comfort.

It is a common misconception that if you have back issues you should opt for a firm or “orthopaedic” mattress. There is some useful information on this subject available from chiropractic.co.uk and we have further information in an article we have on our website.

I trust that this helps to some extent but please telephone our office on 0161 437 4419 for further advice and information whereupon we will be able to recommend a mattress for you.

kind regards Julie
