A customer asked

So much choice! We are in the process of buying a mattress for a small double bed, slatted with a wooden frame. Its for my teenage daughter and having jumped on various mattresses in a number of stores she declared the John Lewis Egyptian cotton 5000 her favourite. I like the fact it is made from natural fibres and seems to be well made but it is outside of my price range (which is closer to £500 than £900). Any suggestions of what I can look for that will provide her with similar comfort but be more affordable?

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your question.

Please note that it is impossible to provide any form of comparison to the John Lewis mattress because they do not publish the specific details of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre), instead you are provided with vague information.

Bonded wool and cotton

For a budget of £500 you will find it difficult to purchase a mattress with entirely natural upholstery layers. In our Artisan range the 1500 is the lowest priced containing 53% natural fibres and retailing for £785.00 for a double. If this is beyond your budget, please view the Origins range which are traditional pocket sprung mattresses with synthetic fillings.  We would need to know body weights for the spring tension, preferred feel details and exact budget. We will then be able to direct you to the appropriate mattress within our ranges.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please note that it is impossible to provide any form of comparison to the John Lewis mattress because they do not publish the specific details of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre), instead you are provided with vague information.

I trust this assists and look forward to speaking to you in due course.  Please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
