Problems with Somnus mattress

Helen asked
23rd August 2013

Hi, I bought a Somnus bed in November 2011 for just over £4000. I have never had a Somnus bed before and chose Somnus as the reports on their pocket spring beds were good. After sleeping on the bed for a few months my partner and I are starting to get pain in our lumbar region of our backs which lasts for anything up to 30 minutes after getting out of bed.

The bed itself feels like a Victorian mattress and had no spring at all, there is no structural support and when I complained to the company they sent someone out who said we had to turn the very heavy mattress every week!!

As we work as Paramedics, the health of our backs is extremely important and we have asked them to change or refund the mattress and they refuse.

In short I have paid a huge amount of money for a second rate mattress which is the most uncomfortable unsupportive mattress that I have ever owned, can you give me any advice please on how I can rectify this problem?

Thanks, Helen.

Hi Helen.

Thanks for your question.

Without knowing the actual model name becomes impossible to see what could have happened to cause your discomfort.

Please read the article found here. Which will detail the major points you should consider when looking at buying a mattress, from the points in the article maybe you can pinpoint what has gone wrong

I must be in agreement with Somnus about the regular turning of the mattress – albeit more regular when new (and weekly does seem a little excessive).

£4000 for a mattress indicates to me that there will be virtually no man-made fibres in your mattress and therefore a predominance of natural fillings does have a tendency to compact somewhat – but not deteriorate – but regular turning allows the upholstery to relax without the constant pressure on one area of your mattress.

I would advise you to address the issues you have with at least one topper – two would be better [Read here as to why] This will go some way to address your reluctance to turn/rotate the mattress.
