TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Vi Spring Elite equivalent?

Hi asked

13th March 2014

We have been sleeping in a firm bed and suffered it for 12 years, you can’t say we didn’t give it a go. We currently have a marks and spencer superking, latex over pocket spring with a firmness rating of 4. My husband is 14 1/2 stone and I am 12 stone, so a couple of hefty weights. My husband tends to run hot and insists on a 4 tog duvet for majority of the year so he would not be able to cope with a memory foam mattress. We did have some trouble lifting the 6ft to our bedroom but cannot remember if it was just its weight or height, and reluctant to downsize as my husband is like a furnace so I like a bit of distance between us….haha, that old chestnut!

Now after trawling shops and testing for nano seconds before feeling like a fool I have found your web site and would love your advice. My friend has vi sprung elite in her guest bedroom which I have always slept well in but as my budget is 1000-1500 for mattress and base we are looking for the best we could afford. I would rather wait and save for longer if it would make a huge difference as we both sleep badly and wake with back pain. I look forward to your email and hope you can help cut through all the confusion. >

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

The fact that you like The Elite is a good enough indicator of what you are after.

Personally, I don’t think the Elite would be suitable for you both as a long term permanent mattres as the upholstery is purely a wool and Cotton blend (BL-WC).

This does not have any support elements just Comfort elements.

BL-WC is the component we use on all of the Artisan mattreses as the final comfort layer in a 1200gsm weight plus the other supportive layers.

The combined total weight in the Vi Spring Elite is 3150 gsm.

It has to be said that for your budget of £1500 for the complete set there is only the Artisan 1500 in the John Ryan range – See Here https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product/artisan-1500/ – a fabulous mattress for the price, but is in no way a comparable mattress in terms of feeling to the Vi Spring Elite.

John Ryan By Design Artisan 1500
1500gsm Wool
2600gsm Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
3700gsm Polyester
4600gsm: Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
5700gsm Polyester
61200 gsm Cashmere Hair Pad as Insulator
71500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM4300gsm

However, having said that, it would be a suitable mattress (in Medium Spring tension) for you both.

To get the feeling of the softness of The Elite you would need to add a topper (which should be a necessity to any mattress – see here for why: https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/understanding-beds/mattress-toppers-2/ As you have had a latex mattress in the past I do think there is a good and viable solution to your requirements by adding a latex topper to The Artisan 1500.

John Ryan  have a fantastic latex topper here.

https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product-category/mattresses/toppers/ I realise this will be in excess of your available budget but absolutely well worth it in the long run.

Obviously after 12 years it is unlikely that M&S will have the same model but I can hazzard a good guess that the latex used in those days would not be the same latex as is used now – and obviously the blend ratio would not have been published in order to determine the overall quality.

We hope that helps.
