Would pure wool filling compact quicker than mixed natural fibres?

Nina

I am trying to identify a divan bed with wool filling, like Vispring Shetland. However, how much settlement (hardening) will happen and how fast? Considering the Shetland mattress, my current woolen quilt is having more than 2000g of merinowool inside and it is not that thick and Shetland has somewhat the same grams of filling. I definately do not want to feel the coils via upholstring, even I am planning to have a luxury topper on top of the mattress. Would a mixture of fillings take time and pressure better than just pure wool filling? What are the softest mattress on the market with less than 1.5mm diameter coils. I am not able to find any mattress in the whole Nordic countries, I am a tiny lady and no ”cloud castles” in the shape of beds are available. Thank you.

Hi Nina,

Thank you for your enquiry.  Wool has very little in terms of supporting qualities so will compress quicker than layering it with other natural fibres such as horsehair or flax. Many pure wool mattresses will develop dips when the wool settles.

This is something that all mattress do which is why we recommend turning a mattress once a month for the first year as well as to utilise the whole sleep surface to even out the natural settlement.

Artisan Sublime

Our two softest mattresses in our natural fibre Artisan range are the Artisan Luxury and the Artisan Sublime.  The Artisan Luxury has layers of wool and horsehair and the top layer is blended wool and cotton to give a soft sink in feel.  The Artisan Sublime has bamboo and alpaca in the top layers and the supportive layers of horsetail and flax underneath. The two rows of springs on this mattress give more progressive support than the one tier in the Artisan Luxury.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

The gauge of our soft spring tension is 1.2mm and can support people with body weight up to 9 stone.  We would not recommend the use of a mattress topper for the first few weeks while you get a true feel for the mattress. If after this time you would like to soften the upholstery layer we would recommend a natural fibre topper to tweak the comfort layers.

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
