Divan or bedstead?

A customer asked

I'm wondering are there any advantages or disadvantages to having a Bed Frame or a Divan base. I have been to John Lewis and to be honest I left confused than when I went in so thought I'd ask someone who knows what they are talking about!

Hi Gerry,

A nice bargain.

The argument between Divan Bases and Bed Frames is easy to understand if we break it down into three points.

  1. Bed frames usually have wooden slats to support the mattress and as long as these are no more than 3 inches apart they will provide an adequate support. We often recommend to place a sheet or old duvet over any slats to protect the underside of your mattress to prevent any splinters from the wood snagging the underside of your mattress.

Divan Bases come in two types. Platform top and Sprung divan. Both have the option to add storage underneath in either 2 or 4 drawer options.

  1. Platform top, is a solid flat surface to support your mattress giving an even weight distribution.
  2. Sprung Divans, as the name suggest have a layer of springs on top of the Divan. This can make your mattress last longer and will make the overall feel slightly softer.

We have a wide range of bases why not start by taking a look at our Origins Platform base.

Alternatively if you think a sprung option is more up your street have a look at our Artisan Range of bases
