Different bodyweight mattress advice

A customer asked

Hi John, I hope you can advise us on what double mattress to buy, We are both quite heavy, 14st and 17st. We were thinking of getting a memory foam mattress as they seem quite comfy. We do like it to be too firm or too soft. I mostly sleep on the front and my husband tends to sleep on side/back. We have a wooden slatted bed frame which we have had for 8 years, but our current mattress is just as old and has a dip in one side. Thank-you for any tips!

Hi Julie.

Thank you for your enquiry via our website.  At your bodyweight, we would pair you with a medium spring tension whilst your husband is borderline between the medium and the firm tension depending on his height.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

A dual spring tension (where one half of the mattress is medium and the other is firm) one piece mattress or the zip and link option are only available in king size and above.  We wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the comfort layers as your husband is a side sleeper and this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  Likewise, we wouldn't recommend anything too soft for yourself as you sleep on your front, so you should be looking at something with medium comfort layers.  The Origins Pocket 1500 and the Artisan Naturals are our two most popular models within the medium comfort range.

Memory foam utilises body heat in order to be able to mould to the shape of your body but as it retains this heat it makes many sleepers overheat.  If you are looking for a foam based mattress you should consider latex as it is more durable and responsive and less heat retentive than memory foam.

If you would like to discuss the suitability of any of our mattresses please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
