Hi, Having spent a few days researching mattresses on your website I’m burnt out !

I am 5ft and 11st and my husband is 6ft and 15st. We both have middle aged aches and pains mine not too serious. My husband has Ankylosing Spondylitis which is controlled so doesn’t have too much pain. We both sleep on our sides tend to start together in the middle then move over to our own sides of the bed. We replaced our Sealy mattress with a cheap one a couple of years back and now it sags in the middle, I feel like I’m sleeping up hill!

We still have our Sealy base approx 8 years old, it has some kind of spring system across the top. Would you recommend that we need to replace the base as well, although it looks OK to me?

Before I found your site I was looking for a pocket sprung mattress with latex, now I’m not sure. I was looking at your Origins Pocket Latex 1500 but after reading that you don’t generally recommend one sided mattresses I’m unsure. So I have considered the Sequenced Pocket, Artisan Tailored or Artisan Naturals, again I’m unsure. I was originally looking to spend between £500 and £600 but will seriously consider doubling this for a decent nights sleep. I have also seen that you can adapt a double mattress to suit different weights. Is there a definite “join” in the middle and does this effect turning the mattress?

We both prefer a firm mattress so is the alternative a firm mattress with a softer topper?

Grateful for your advice. .

Hi Jane.

Sorry to hear you are already 'burnt out'.

As I say on our opening page, these are the 'Basics' you need to know!

First.

If your base seems fine - no springs showing from above then there is no need to replace. This can be done at a later date - better your budget spent initially on the mattress rather than proportioning to the base as well. Even though we are adamant that one-sided mattresses are a no-no, this logic falls short of latex mattresses.

Latex on pocket springs is a compromise to full latex core and layer combination. I wouldn't be too hasty to reject this model if it is at the top of your budget.

The Artisan range has the benefit of natural fibres. The Tailored Pocket and The Naturals are identical except for the spring unit - The Naturals uses calico encased which is premium and phenomenally expensive.

The choice is yours dependant on budget. Finally, the crucial part to all of this is your husbands Ankylosing Spondylitis. We will need to speak to see what aspects of the mattress can be tailored to prevent overdue pressure and not to exacerbate the condition.

Keep in touch.

John and Ryan.
