A customer asked

Hi, Similar to the commment posted by Les on June 16th 2012. I too have had a disastrous time with Bensons and now delelooped back pain as a consequence. Finally after 18 months and a bed inspection, the SEALY SYDNEY mattress that I bought was declared faulty. Bensons are now trying to send me a SEALY replacement mattress of the same type and I have caused a dispute and asked for a re-selection for the same value although i did complain in the 28 days which does entitle me to a refund!!!

I don't want to make the same mistake so would appreciate your advice on what mattress. They have offered me the following 3 from SEALY: Auckland Imperial Ortho Pocket Firm rest Can you please advise which of these are the better in regards to construction / quality?

Also, looking to buy a kingsize bed from your range, please advise I am approx 11.5 st?

Hi Azra.

It seems that the Sydney is no longer for sale on Benson's website, but from previous notes, I know that this was not a particularly cheap model. The Kingsize mattress [£824 (with a ridiculous WAS price of £1939.) Feb: 2012] To be perfectly honest I cannot bring myself to recommend any of the models you mention and if a refund is in the offering I would opt for that and start your purchase again armed with the knowledge from this site.

Please feel free to update your comment with how this pans out.

Hi and thanks for your response.

Bensons have now confirmed they will only provide me with a replacement from SEALY with the 3 beds mentioned and the Brisbane which is now replacing the SEALY SYDNEY. I know you cannot give an opinion but I need to take the replacement and would value your advice on which you think is the better of the 4 suggested. Hi, again Azra. It's not that I cannot give an opinion. The fact of the matter is that there is no comparison data available on any of these models to see which one is giving you the best mattress for your money. I would say do not spend any more money, so if they are giving you a direct replacement opt for the most expensive one. Otherwise, go for the one where you spend the minimum amount. I know this may be frustrating for you but it is the scourge of the industry unless you know the basic detail of what the mattress contains it is impossible - not difficult - Impossible!to make any kind of comparisons. Mattresses can be made to look absolutely lovely, but when dissected shows there is bugger all to warrant the money you are expected to pay.

If I were you I would get back in touch with Sealy / Bensons and ask them precisely to give you the specification of each mattress in order for you to come to a decision on the replacement. The key is the weights and levels of upholstery (disregard spring counts for the time being). Ensure they give you this detail for each model. You asking them this will really pi** them off but stick with it. It's their own doing and is completely wrong. For example in The Brisbane it says "...The deep zoned layer of Innergetic Latex gives outstanding comfort and pressure relief." Now.

How deep is deep? Innergetic latex is a good product but if it is used in a minimal amount (3cm would be acceptable by the way) it will be relatively useless. Once you let me know what you find out, write back and I will be in the slightly better position to advise.

Note: I will shortly remove this comment off the feedback page (want to keep this section clean of enquiries) and place it on the Contact page. John Hi John / Ryan, Just to add to a previous mail I sent. Benson's have now allowed me to make a re-selection from the store rather than just from the SEALY range (which I would never go near again). Can you let me know what your thoughts are on the following (which I am considering): Silentnight Mirapocket Ultimate; Silentnight Mirapocket Premium; Relyon Raffles The Silentnight are double-sided so thinking of getting the tufted one and I can put a topper on to make it comfortable. Would appreciate your thoughts on the matter and which out of these or the range Bensons in your view would be ok.

Hi, again Azra.

Once again, without any specification, it is impossible to do any worthwhile side by side comparison.

For example, all the detail you have for the Silentnight Mirapocket Premium is [Bensons: Feb 2013] • Twin Layers of 2000 Mirapocket springs • 5 Zones of Targeted Support • No roll together • Edge to edge support • Extra deep luxurious comfort layers • Superior hand tufted • Double sided mattress • allergy UK approved the description you have for The Silentnight Mirapocket Ultimate is [Bensons: Feb 2013] • Twin Layers of 2000 Mirapocket springs • 5 Zones of Targeted Support • No roll together • Edge to edge support • Extra deep luxurious comfort top layer • Double sided mattress • Allergy UK approved The only visible difference that I can make from these is that one is quilted (Ultimate) and one is tufted (Premium).

There is no hint whatsoever what the "extra deep luxurious comfort layers" are, and it is this crucial element that should form the basis of your choice. The Relyon model is also lacking in the specification - even whether it is one sided or two sided! The only detail they give you about the upholstery is: [Raffles Mattress: Bensons Feb 2013] "The mattress has luxurious layers of fillings including; natural cotton and lambswool.

" Ridiculous!

How on earth are you expected to do any sort of comparison with such an appalling lack of detail? I would get back in touch with Customer Services and ask them to give you a breakdown of each model in order that you can do adequate comparisons. Azra, I hope this is putting what you are up against into some sort of perspective. You are asking us what in our opinion is the better choice but without this information, we are as blind as you. Like I said at the beginning - it's absolutely not possible to do this and they know it.

Don't give up.

John and Ryan.
