MDF for memory foam mattresses

A customer asked

Hi I recently shelled out for a new bed with a solid slatted base and initially used our existing sprung mattress but now we're thinking of a memory foam mattress. Is the mdf suggestion in this article also appropriate for memory foam mattresses?

The slats are 7cm wide with a 5cm gap between slats >

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your question.

When using a slatted base with a pocket sprung mattress we advise that you should board over the slats using a 3-5mm piece of MDF or Plywood if the gaps exceed 3" to ensure the mattress does not sink between the slats.

Slatted bases are NOT suitable to be used with a foam mattress unless the slats are fully boarded over. This is because the foam will contour to the gaps between the slats in the same way in which it moulds to your body.

Hope that helps.

If you have any further questions please contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards,
Amy.
