A customer asked

Hi My husband and I spent a weekend of trying out mattresses to replace the current one on our slatted base frame. In terms of our weights I'm 11 stone and hubby is about 15 stone. We narrowed it down to either the Richmond kingsize mattress from Dreams or the sealy rosebury pocket spring mattress, both of which seem unique to Dreams. I've tried google to see if I can find the same mattresses from a different supplier (I'm assuming the same mattresses are called different things by different retailers). Are you able to suggest any other options or names for these models from other retailers?

Many thanks. >

Hi Anna.

Thank you for your enquiry.  Let's see what you are up against;

The Richmond Mattress is a basic two-sided mattress.  I have issue with the specification stating "Up to 1400 pocket springs and plush fillings of cotton and pure English wool offer you firm support with luxurious comfort for a great night's sleep" I would want to know exactly what these plush fillings are.  It is rare to see cotton used without the addition of wool (for the FR properties) I also would want to know what the supplementary fillings are - The specification only gives the key fillings.  I would also want to know if Polyester / White Fibre etc is used within the mattress and if so what is the weight by GSM.  I would also question whether the wool and cotton is blended with any other product (such as polyester).

The Sealy Rosebury springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring Mattress - Firm: is also a 1400 pocket spring mattress but with latex comfort layers.  In the description it tells you "..  Luxurious fillings include a deep layer of zoned latex for outstanding comfort and support meaning you’ll go to sleep quicker and stay asleep for longer.." I would want to know how deep this deep layer actually is?  The description also states that "fillings INCLUDE ..." What would the other fillings be?  The quality of the latex isn't up for question as it comes from the same supplier as ours (Latexco).

Now, we use 6cm plus an additional spring insulator layer of HD foam in our Origins Pocket Latex 1500 - our Kingsized mattress is priced at £895

The biggest question we get asked is how people can buy a mattress off the internet without trying it out?  This would be a viable question to an extent if our mattress descriptions and specifications were as nonsensical and useless to the consumer as the Dreams examples above.  The argument that these mattresses can be tried out instore also falls short if you consider the possibility that the answers to the few questions I posed above could be addressed with some degree of certainty by the sales staff.  And if they could tell you how long it had been on display and how many potential customers had already tried it, softening the comfort layers.

If you are able to get the answers from the questions I have posed above, we would all be in a better position to do basic like for like comparisons.

Two other things for you to consider, firstly, what are the body weights of the individuals sleeping on the mattress?  This is essential to determine which spring tension will give you the right level of support.  Secondly, what is the space between the slats on your base?  If they are 3 inches or greater you will get a lumpy feel from your new mattress as it settles into the gaps.  Meaning that you wouldn't get the correct support from the springs and over time this will damage your mattress.  To prevent this we would recommend placing MDF or Plywood over the slats basically converting your base to a platform base.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)
