A customer asked

Hi, we are really struggling to choose a bed!

We tried ones in John Lewis and liked their 1400 pocket sprung ortho, Kingsize, but found the price a bit steep. Would the Rest Assured Venice 1400 pocket ortho effectively be the same?

We have tried and failed to find a shop where we can try the Rest Assured one out (actually, couldn't find any with 1400). Will all beds with these similar specs feel the same?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi Ann,

Thank you for your question.

The John Lewis 1400 Ortho is manufactured for them by Hypnos with a retail price of £650 (KS: Feb 2013).

The upholstery consists of "Rebound polycotton, blended polywool, Airstream polyester" and is a two sided mattress which is much better than having a one sided mattress as you are able to turn and rotate the mattress which means that you are fully utilising the whole of the sleep surface which will then increase the life of the mattress.

The nearest mattress that we have to the John Lewis 1400 Ortho would be our Artisan 1500.

As you will see from the description of this mattress, the fillings are :-

Wool, Rebound Polycotton and Polyester

We would need to know the body weights of the people who will be sleeping on the mattress as the spring tension is dictated by body weight in order to give you the correct support

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Rest Asssured Venice 1400 retails at £300 (various websites) and the most information I can find on this is the upholstery is made up of polyester fillings.  Also this mattress is a one sided mattress.

For this retail price it is as much as you can reasonably expect.

In answer to your question they are not the same - the JL 1400 Ortho being the more superior built mattress - but .., you are paying twice the price for it.

I personally would use the Venice (or similar) as the support and complement this with an amazing topper to give the comfort - and still come away with change.

Even though you consider the JL price steep at £650 - it really isn't that much for a KS mattress.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
