A customer asked

hello John & Ryan An excellent site and so much information!

We are in the market for a new bed & mattress with a budget of up to £1500 - £2000. One of us is 14 and a half stone and has arthritis and suffers with lower back frame, the other is 11 and a half stone, sleeps on the side and likes a fairly firm feel. We currently have a Vi spring bed & frame and have tried a Harrisons Kuhliko 5520 with topper that in a very short try, we liked - me the 'medium' side, he the 'firm'. Would you recommend a mattress from your Artisan range?

I would appreciate any advice or observations you could offer. thank you Cath >

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your question.

I have tried to find the specification for the Harrisons bed you refer to in order to provide a considered response, however, despite a comprehensive search on the internet, I have been unable to locate the information.

I wonder if you have been provided with any specific details?

Split tension mattresses are available in our Artisan range but please note that at your body weights we wouldn't put you on a split tension. We would match you both to a Medium spring as neither of you will compress a Firm spring. The top layers will feel exactly the same regardless of the spring tension inside;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We would generally advise with the arthritis to go for something medium feeling giving a slight sink but not too much and some pressure relief.

Our Artisan Naturals and Bespoke 004 are comparable to the Vi-Spring Regal Superb. Both these models have that true medium feel in the top layers, ideal for yourself. As the only thing you can alter in the mattress is the spring tension then there will need to be a compromise as you can't have the firm feeling top layers on one side and medium feeling top layers on the other. As such, the solution might be to have that split tension.

I hope this helps but if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
