Hi, We need some help please!

So, let's start with the basics.... I am 6'1" and 15.5stone, Liz is little - 5'4" and slim... We presently have a 1000 pocket sprung (miracoil) memory foam mattress. It is too hot, too difficult to move in and too unbalanced. (Ok, it was cheap!). We have been looking today and are a bit flummoxed. We found a Shakespear (I think the Elite 1500) - Was at £520. Was pleasantly comfortable. We then found a Connoisseur Supreme Mattress at Bensons. It was very comfortable, but at £1000 I wanted to perform some more research - which I am glad I did. Having looked at your information, the pillow top is a major concern. So, what we are after is: 1. Something medium to medium firm. 2. Stability - Liz does not bounce when I move!

3. Something that will last. 4. Something with a reasonable budget (between £400-£1000). 5. Something that it not too hot (having had memory foam, the novelty has worn off). We have an iron bedstead with a wooden slatted (unsprung) base. Can you suggest a mattress and topper combination?

Thanks in advance for your help. Kind Regards Alex & Liz

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your question.

I note your concerns regarding heat in respect of your memory foam mattress.

Having reviewed the details for the Shakespeare mattress that you refer to, I notice that this is a mattress comprised of foam and polyester and in is fact a one sided mattress.

Firstly, the foam may generate heat, which you want to avoid and secondly, as this only one sided, it is likely to have a reduced life span when compared to a normal pocket sprung double sided mattress.

As far as the Connoisseur is concerned, this is what is known as a pillow top mattress, which may appear luxurious in the first instance, however, I would advise against such a purchase.

This is because when the pillow top flattens, you need to replace the whole mattress whereas if you bought a mattress with a separate topper, when that fails the only expense is a new topper.

There is some more detailed analysis as to why to avoid such a mattress within our site and again this mattress is one sided.

Given your body weight and making an assumption regarding Liz's weight, I would suggest that you opt for a medium tension mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I would suggest you look at our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress as this would provide you both with a medium feel and is reasonably priced, although I note you have not confirmed the size required.

This mattress can be also made in a Zip and Link set, which would assist further when you move so as not to disturb Liz.

As with any mattress, I would advise using it for at least 4-6 weeks prior to deciding upon the need for a topper. If after that period you're finding it too firm then look at adding a topper at that stage.

I hope that this helps but if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Mike.
