We are looking to buy a replacement mattress but would like your advice on what to buy. I weigh 17 stones and my partner weighs 11.5.We have always gone for firm mattresses in the past but are open to suggestions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

With your particular weight differential, I would suggest that you opt for a split tension mattress, firm for you and medium for your partner. Such products are available in our Artisan range in king size and above either in a one piece or a zip and link set. A firm tension, whilst being suitable for you, would not, in my view be suitable for your partner.  The springs in a mattress are there to give you support and that support is dictated by body weight.

The comfort comes from the top upholstery layers which are on top of the springs.  It is also the weight of the entire depth of various upholstery components used directly on top of the springs and this is known as the ‘combined upholstery weight GSM’.  This is the weight in One Square Metre of all upholstery used in your mattress. If you know this GSM figure – you would be able to tell which mattress is better than another without even lying on it.RPC 800

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please view the Artisan Naturals, & Artisan Bespoke 004 both of which can be made with the split tension referred to. Both of these mattresses have an overall medium comfort meaning that the mattress is neither too soft nor too firm.

Once you have viewed these products, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice as to suitability.

Kind regards Julie
