Bed frame lacking central support

We're looking for a new mattress and are likely to go for a good quality pocket sprung (possibly from your Artisan range) which will be heavier than our old one. We like our wooden bed frame and don't really want to replace it, however in researching I've seen central support mentioned as a must, and ours doesn't have any. It just has slats spanning the whole width. How much of a problem is this? Thanks

Hi Julia,

That's a really good question, and we're glad you've asked it.

Our mattresses are heavy. We manage to squeeze huge quantities of fillings with high GSM's into our mattresses. They do therefore require some solid support from the mattress base.

We would recommend you retrofit a support bar in the middle of your bed base if you want to keep it. We wouldn't be confident if we placed say an Artisan Naturals kingsize which weighs 58kg onto some thin slats without the support bar. Without this, the slats may snap or bow causing damage to the mattress and discomfort to you too. You basically need to find a way to support the middle of the bed as our beds are too heavy to stay put without this.

Alternatively, you could replace your base to a hand made sprung edge base which will take the weight and support the mattress adequately. We also sell bases in our outlet if budget is a concern with the base.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
