Latex Mattresses for Australia?
Hello,
I have a futon base with thin wooden slats, and am currently sleeping on an all natural mattress comprising of only a firm coconut shell fibre core and then three layers of all natural latex and all natural wool.
Although the bed seems to have a medium comfort feel I still have pain in the areas of my body that give the most pressure on the mattress, and overall I struggle to be comfortable most nights. Is it the bed base that is the problem? Or do I need a springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring mattress to help reduce the pain and inflammation in my body? If I buy a new double pocket spring mattress to fit my double wooden base will the mattress be too firm? How many pockets do I need?
I am female of medium height and weigh about 80 kilograms. An idea I had was to buy a simple Calico pocket spring mattress without any comfort layers and instead use the latex that I already own to put on top of the new Calico pocket mattress (as my current coconut/latex mattress can be taken apart layer by layer)
And lastly do you ship to Australia? And if you do not ship to Australia do you know of any Australian retailers who provide hand sewn calico mattresses? Because I can't find any. Thankyou
Hi Laura,
Thanks for getting in touch it sounds like you already have a good set of upholstery layers with the coir and latex. However, from your complaint, it seems like the support layer may be missing.
If you're getting sore hips and aches it sounds more that your sinking too far through these upholstery layers and springs/">potentially need a spring unit, such as calico, to help push back against the pressure of your body.
Wooden slats are pretty brutal for a mattress without any spring units in, as they don't give at all. You may also find the upholstery layers conforming to the gaps in between the slats which may make the bed feel quite irregular in the top layers. Almost as if the bed is lumpy or not truly flat when you get on it. We have an article on slatted bases here and always recommend a layer of plywood or boarding to prevent this.
Lastly, I'm afraid we don't ship to Australia at present and don't know of any independent mattress specialists like John Ryan By Design in your country. We would advise you board the slats and look for some form of spring layer to go underneath all those lovely upholstery layers.
We wish you well in your search!
