Hi, just narrowing down our choice of mattresses. We're looking at the Artisan but can't decide on the 2000 or 1500 kingsize. We weigh 12.5 st and 14st respectively.Aiming to retain a slatted wooden base - would I need to cover this with 3mm hardboard or equivalent?Topper - is this necessary?Much appreciated.....

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your question.

The difference between the Artisan 1500 and the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 is not only the number of natural fillings but also the spring unit used in each mattress.

John Ryan By Design Artisan 1500
1 500gsm Wool
2 600gsm Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
3 700gsm Polyester
4 600gsm: Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
5 700gsm Polyester
6 1200 gsm Cashmere Hair Pad as Insulator
7 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM 4300gsm

The Artisan 1500 has 50/50 natural fillings and man-made fillings and has a medium comfort layer and the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has 85% natural fillings and has a double layer of springs which actually gives the mattress a slightly firmer spring tension.   The overall comfort layers in the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 is medium.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Tailored Pocket
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton.
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Poly Cotton
4 1500gsm Pure 100% Mohair
5 2000 Double Tier Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM 3950gsm

If either of the two mattresses is placed onto a solid base, this will firm the mattress up again.

We would not advise using a topper at this stage as you need to sleep on the mattress to get to know what the top layers actually feel like.   If the mattress appears to be a little too firm, then, by all means, add a topper to give you some extra comfort layers.

We hope the above is of assistance but please do not hesitate to contact the office should you require any further advice on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
