A customer asked

Hello John and Ryan, First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to provide such detailed advice and to respond to people's queries so thoroughly. My husband and I are buying beds for the first time (having lived in furnished rented accomodation for many years) and hadn't realised just how difficult the decision on the right mattresses can be!

We have decided to get ourselves a super-king space saving bed frame from Warren Evans (http://www.warrenevans.com/beds/bimini_bed/?fgid=15) mainly because it's the only superking that fits in our bedroom and we like the frame. We are getting a king-size Trinity for the guest room (http://www.warrenevans.com/beds/trinity_bed/?fgid=12) which will be primarily used by my parents when they visit. I am 5'6" usually weigh 60kg but am pregnant so imagine I'll go up to about 72-75kg. My husband is 5'10" and weighs about 75-78kg. Our budget for our mattress is probably up to £500, though we could go slightly higher if we really needed to. My parents are both similar heights as us and their weights are about 65kg and 70kg respectively. Our budget for the guest mattress is probably more like £300, but again we could go slightly higher if we should. All of us prefer firmer beds (not rock hard, but supportive and not saggy) and I thought from my initial research that pocket-sprung mattresses are the best option (we definitely don't want memory foam). Now I realize it's not as simple as just finding a pocket sprung in our budget and going forward!

I would be grateful for any advice as to what we should be looking for. I had shortlisted mattresses from Rest Assured and Silentnight from online stores [font color="maroon">numerous links removed.

Hi Devsdev,

Thanks for your question.

We would often advise that pocket sprung mattresses are indeed the "best" option as you have the springs inside providing support and then the fillings sitting atop the springs providing you the comfort as these are what you are in direct contact with.

Below are our own guidelines on spring tension vs body weight;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please note however that we do find in general that people of 9st plus tend to prefer a Medium spring tension as it is a bit more supportive.

Your budget does narrow the choices down to the Origins range of mattresses. These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses with synthetic fillings. Given your preference of feel I'd advise to look at the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000. This has a medium spring tension as standard that will cover all of those body weights. it then has a firmer top upholstery that does in turn accommodate a much wider range of body weights. However, whilst it is firmer in the top layers, we get a lot of feedback that it's very comfortable at the same time.

My concern here is that this model sits outside your budget so it might be worth checking out our Outlet section. These are items that have been produced, used previously and returned to us. Once we receive them back we grade and discount them accordingly. Below are the grading guidelines;

Grade Discount Description
B 20% Will have been used by a customer and returned under the 60 night love it or return it guarantee, it may have a few marks from transit and courier handling.
C 40% Will have been used by a customer and returned under the 60 night love it or return it guarantee, it will have quite a few marks and could even have a small tear, nothing detrimental to the life or use of the mattress.

It might be worth keeping a check in here as the Outlet is updated weekly. All of our items, the Outlet included, are subsequently covered by our standard 60 day love it or return it guarantee. This is a no quibble policy meaning that if the product isn't right then it can be returned for a full refund or alternatively you can utilise the one time exchange.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
