Guidance on a mattress recommendation
Hi,
I have spoken to someone at JR on the phone but since have looked again at various options and its late, hence sending online. I have a bed in the box (2 in fact) and they will both go back. I don't like to waste but they haven't been quite good enough.
I am torn now between higher level mattresses (in comparison) and wondered if you had some pearls of wisdom.
1) is the lower end Vispirings. I am looking at the Elite, Realm and Plymouth from John Lewis. 2) is the Mammoth Shine Advanced 3000 medium which i have discovered I can get half off so that's an exceptional deal and its been comfy when testing. Then there is your Artisan 1500 and Naturals. I think beyond that (except maybe the latex) is out of my budget. I was thinking about the Hypnos 1800 from JL but i think the others are simply better or at least better value.
I like that the Mammoth and yours are deeper. The Visprings are only 21cm. I'm starting to go a bit mattress crazy and on reading other blogs and questions, you are always honest. For reference, I am 81kg, 187cm, am after a king size. It will be going on an ottoman with a flat base not slatted.
Any guidance would be well received.
Kind regards
Ben
Hi Ben,
Thank you for placing your question. Buying a mattress can become quite an experience as there are so many to choose from plus trying a mattress in a showroom for a couple of minute, to be honest, does not give you a true reflection of how that mattress is likely to feel through the night.
The Vi Spring mattresses that you have been looking at being the Elite, Plymouth & Realm, are all soft in the top upholstery layers and have a similar feel to our Artisan Luxury. The Vi Spring Realm however is a bedstead mattress which means that it has been made to go onto a solid base such as your Ottoman. The upholstery fillings in each of the Vi Spring mattresses are stated as being Wool & Cotton with the Vi Spring Realm having the additional layer of Bamboo.
If you are wanting a mattress that will give you a soft luxurious feel but with good support, then our Artisan Luxury is the mattress for you. Our mattress although having a similar feel to the Vi Spring mattresses, does have 2000 gsm more upholstery per side together with additional support layers to combat dipping and settlement.

It really is worth know what the gsm is of the mattress you are looking at. The gsm or grams per square metre tells you just how much upholstery has been used inside the mattress and will enable you to determine the quality. Not a lot of Bed Companies will provide this information as they tend to see this as a trade secret. Here at John Ryan by Design, we believe that each customer has a right to know what is inside the mattress they are purchasing as this is an expensive item.
As far as your body weight and height is concerned, this determines what spring tension you will require as it is the springs within the mattress that provide the support. At your bodyweight, I would recommend a medium spring tension which is more than enough to give you good support.
I have also had a look at the Mammoth Shine Advanced 3000 mattress which you have mentioned. This mattress contains 160mm of medical grade foam together with 90mm of soft touch sky foam on top of 3000 pocket springs in a kingsize. They do not provide any further specific information relating to this mattress and so it difficult to recommend a mattress from our range that would give you a similar feel other than our Origins Comfort 1000 mattress which contains man made fillings such as 750g soft polyester, 500g of polyester and a one inch foam insulator on top of the pocket springs and has an overall soft feel. The Mammoth Shine mattress is described as providing a more medium to soft feel.
