Slatted Base with Artisan Naturals Mattress

Paul Morris

Hi, we are looking to buy a slatted bed base, something like the Sienna bed from Feather & Black or the Loaf Mirabelle French bed.

Can you please let me know if a firm Artisan Naturals mattress would be suitable for the base?

Many thanks

Hi Paul,

Thanks for getting in touch about slatted bases and our mattress range.

All of our mattresses are suitable for slats. We do offer some guidance though that the slats need to be no further than 2 inches apart. If they are more than this then it can cause damage to the mattress and causing the mattress to contort between these gaps over time. You can board over the base with some ply or MDF if this is the case. It's a relatively cheap fix.

As for the Artisan Naturals, yes this mattress is fine for a slatted base. It will give you a true medium feel in the upholstery layer which brings me onto your question about firmness.

Mattress Firmness vs Spring Tension

Mattress firmness is provided predominantly by the comfort/upholstery layers and not just the spring unit. This is where most people get confused and end up choosing the wrong mattress.

Spring tensions are based on body weight as per the table below.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

If you're wanting a firmer feel mattress in the upholstery layer then our Artisan Bespoke or Artisan 1500 are both firmer feeling than the Artisan Naturals. Placing any mattress onto a solid slatted base will also help firm it up slightly.

It may be best if you get back in touch with some more details such as your body weight, height and sleeping preference then we can help provide a more tailored piece of advice for you Paul.

We look forward to hearing back from you.
All the best
