Hello

I'm looking for a mattress topper that would be suitable for my daughter who suffers from hypermobility and requires regular treatment for it.

She is moving into student accommodation and we have no idea of the quality of the student mattress she will be sleeping on or whether it would be suitable for her.

Are you able to recommend a topper that is a good all-rounder?

Hi Aishah,

Thanks for getting in touch about mattress toppers. Sorry to hear your daughter is requiring treatment for hypermobility. We've helped a number of sleepers with this issue over the years. It's a painful condition and we appreciate you want to ensure your daughter sleeps well at university.

Student accommodation mattresses are not known for their quality or comfort I'm afraid. Usually, its the most basic £99 mattress that the providers use. Replacing them when they inevitably wear out.

You're wise to look for a mattress topper to help improve the chances of sleep success for your daughter. Whilst a topper won't fix a bad bed it can make one bearable. Toppers will only ever soften a mattress. However, given that cheaper mattresses have very little in the way of comfort fillings this topper could be exactly what the student mattress is missing.

The best all-rounder for both comfort & longevity would be a Natural Latex topper. This is because other foams will compress far faster and also retain a lot of heat. A latex topper should last through university, especially if your daughter turns it each month. It will help add a responsive comfort layer to this mattress. These types of toppers are two sided so you an sleep on either side.

Whilst you could look at microfibre mattress toppers although far cheaper they really won't make much of an impact on a cheap basic mattress which your daughter will undoubtedly be sleeping on. You will probably need a couple of these to help add the comfort your daughter requires. So we would advise you think a bit more long term with whichever topper you choose.

You need to be looking at a mattress topper around 5cm in depth with a robust responsive filling. We would advise avoiding memory foam which is heat retentive and can cause sweating/discomfort especially with people with hypermobility who already have joint issues. It's also very slow to react so sleepers can struggle to turn over and move during the night.

All the best
