Harrison Spinks Lima 7200 Medium Mattress Issues

We purchased a king size Harrison Spinks bed 18 months ago, Lima 7200 medium, on a platform base. My husband and I are of similar height but I am 8st 5lb and my husband is 14st 10lb. He finds the mattress comfortable but I am unable to sleep on it as it is too firm and hurts my shoulders, hips and ribs, I am a side sleeper.

We have now purchased a Slumberland Vintage Bronze seal 1800 mattress, hoping that the softer texture of the coverings would be easier on my pressure points, sadly, having slept on the mattress for 8 nights I am still suffering the same issues.

We are both fairly hot sleepers and my husband is a fidget, hence the platform base instead of sprung. We are now considering a 5ft zip and link but with separate tensions, soft for me and medium for my husband. If we were able to choose this option would our platform base still be okay to use?

Before the Harrison Spinks, we had a Dunlopillo latex mattress/">pocket sprung mattress on a sprung base. This was comfortable for me but far too bouncy! As I do prefer a more 'squidgy' feel mattress I would really appreciate any advice you can give with regard to a mattress selection.

Kind regards

Hi Theresa,

Thank you for your question and lets see if we can recommend a mattress that will be more suitable for your requirements.

The Harrison Spinks Lima 7200 mattress only provides the following information and it is a non turn mattress which contains a small amount of soft cotton, absorbent wool and a wool and viscose blend together with 7200 pocket springs:-

''Featuring 3 spring systems, the Harrison Lima 7200 bed is made of a combination of Posturfil pocket springs, sturdy Revolution springs and the latest Microlution air flow springs. The non-turn mattress with this Harrison Spinks bed has a 7200 spring count and made from natural fillings of wool and cotton. There are two rows of side stitching that ensure edge to edge support '

Knowing the GSM of Mattresses

Unfortunately, Harrison Spinks do not advise what the GSM (grams per square metre) is of the fillings used so I can only assume it is a very small amount.   They do not state what sort of feel from the comfort layers you can expect to receive.  The medium tension relates to the support as it is the springs contained within a mattress that provides that support.  The fillings on top of the springs provides the comfort. You really need to know the GSM of any mattress which you are to purchase as this tells you the quality of that mattress so is a very important part of mattress buying.   I set out below an article from our website which provides further information relating to this :-

Finding out how much fibre is in your mattress is key to being able to compare its quality
Slumberland Vintage Bronze Seal Mattress

The Slumberland Vintage Bronze Seal 1800 mattress again contains very little information other than as per below :-

Product Details

  • Great-value, advanced British-made mattress offers firmer-feel comfort
  • With Slumberland’s responsive Pocketed Posture Springing System®
  • 1800 springs (King size)
  • Luxurious natural fillings – wool, cashmere and silk
  • Posture FLEX system offers precise body-moulding pressure relief
  • 30mm of Rheia foam for superior air flow and adaptive support
  • EdgeMAX maximises the sleeping surface area and reduces roll-off
  • A quilted, no-turn mattress with handles
  • An online exclusive from Furniture Village
  • Stretch-knit top with stylish design motif shown here in mod grey, also available in mod blue,

No GSM with regard to the fillings are given so we have no idea how much fibre the mattress contains.  This is also a non turn mattress which is not really recommended as per the video provided above due to the fact that this type of mattress is not going to last very long.  The 1800 pocket springs contained with this mattress are on the firmer side and is therefore providing far too much support with little comfort layers so this is probably why you are still suffering with the same issues.

At your body weights and heights, you both do really need a medium support from the springs contained within the mattress however as you have a platform base, if you were to choose a mattress from our Artisan Range, then your base would certainly firm up the support for you.

Zip & Link Mattresses

A zip & link mattress is perfect if you have any access issues or when you are sensitive to feeling your partner moving around.   If you are to choose different spring tensions, we can make a mattress with a dual spring tension as a one piece mattress, you do not therefore need to order a zip & link unless you would prefer this style of mattress.

Hot Sleeper Advice

As you are both fairly hot sleepers, you would be better on a mattress that contains natural fillings as these provide the coolest sleeping surface as they are high wicking.  They are far more breathable than their synthetic counterparts or dreaded foams.

The problem we have is that you require a different level of comfort to that of your husband so I feel that you are going to have to compromise.   As your husband is clearly happy and comfortable on a medium feel mattress but you like something that is soft and squidgy, you may need to have a mattress with an overall medium comfort but add a topper to your side of the mattress to provide extra comfort layers as a soft mattress is going to be too soft and uncomfortable for your husband.  A zip & link mattress can be made with different levels of support but the overall comfort layers will still be the same.  You cannot have a mattress made with different upholstery fillings as there would be a difference in the height of the mattresses and they would not zip up.

It may be better for you to give our small friendly team a call as it would be better to speak to you personally due to you both needing differing comfort levels.  Please telephone 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards
Julie
