How can I clean my foam mattress protector?

Lee Answered 6 months ago

Hi Frances,

Thanks for your comment about mattress protectors and keeping them clean.

Cleaning your foam mattress protector will depend on the exact washing instructions on the attached care label. So we would always advise that you read this first and follow the specific instructions.

There's a bit of confusion online between a mattress topper and a mattress protector. Mattress protectors usually are made to be washed like bedding, whereas mattress toppers are not.

The above is an example of a 100% Natural Latex Mattress topper. These cannot be washed. Only sponge cleaned with warm soapy water. This is why a mattress protector, that sits above this is vital as they can be fully washed.

Most foam mattress toppers/protectors can't be machine washed. This is because the foam expands and can break down during the washing cycle. Meaning it not only knackers up your topper but may break your washing machine! Memory foam mattress protectors and toppers certainly should not be machine washed. As this will ruin them making them useless on your mattress.

Polyester mattress protectors that are quilted are usually machine washable on a 40-degree short cycle. For these kinds of mattress protectors, we advise you wash them along with your bedding once a week. This will help keep your mattress clean and free from debris. You can see below the kind of mattress protector that we recommend on top of your mattress and or topper combinations.

We recommend you keep your mattress and bedroom clean to ensure the best night sleep. Our top tips are:

  • Wash your bedding on a 40-60 degree full wash cycle once a week
  • Wash any microfibre mattress protectors as well
  • Toppers should be shaken and flipped over where possible
  • Vacuum under and around your bedroom
  • Air your bedroom fully daily where possible by leaving a window open for an hour or so each morning

We hope that helps Frances and if you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
