Storage height in mattress bases and ottomans?

Since lift up ottomans are bought primarily for their storage space why are they so limited in the internal storage height? Even my old sliding door storage base has 35cms of internal storage height - I can't even find something to match this let alone something more useful.

Hi John,

Thanks for your comment asking about the internal height of mattress base storage. It's a good question. We remember the sliding door divan storage bases, which were nearly always a platform top and quite lightweight too.

There are 2 reasons bases internal depths may be smaller in more recent years.

Heavier Higher Quality Mattress Models
The issue with internal mattress base storage is that over the past twenty or so years there's been a move away from lighter mattresses to higher quality natural fibre mattress models. The higher quality mattresses that you find with the likes of Vispring, Savoir and our own mattress range weight anywhere from 25kg in a single to 82kg in a super-king size one piece mattress.

Mattress bases need to be well made to support this and so for most bed bases, they use thicker platform tops and sides to accommodate this weight.

Mattresses have become deeper

The next reason is that many mattresses are now reaching 30cm-33cm in depth for a quality hand made mattress. Whereas an entry-level mattress twenty years ago may have been between 18-20cm far thinner and thus lighter. This increase in height, along with increasing the quantity of mattress fillings, means bases are now slightly lower to allow easy access to the mattress.

We understand it can be frustrating to lose some of the storage with modern bases but the increases in both mattress and bed base quality have been significant which we believe is a fair trade-off.

We have a really detailed article here all about mattress bases and bed frames which may be of further interest.

We hope that helps and if you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
