Harrison’s Spinks Two Faulty Mattresses - Recommendations on what has gone wrong and how to avoid this

Hi. John

I purchased a Harrison’s Spinks Kingsize Emerald 10,000 Gentle Mattress from my local bed shop in 2015. I am a 63-year-old Widow and the only person sleeping in this. I am very petite 5ft 3 and weigh 8stone 4. So definitely not a heavy person.

I found the mattress gradually sagged more and more giving me no support whatsoever. I was going to purchase another mattress but was advised by a friend to complain. Unfortunately, the shop I purchased from had closed. I contacted Harrison Spinks, they send someone out to look at the mattress. His report proved there was a fault. Harrison’s advised me at the time I purchased 2015, the terms of their warranty was 2 years Guarantee 8 years Warranty.

I had no option other than to pay the extra money and get another Harrison’s mattress. I looked at their range at different suppliers. I finally decided upon the Natures Finest 8500 sold in Dreams. Harrison’s replaced my faulty one with this, and I had to pay an extra £705. My original Emerald cost me £1300 as I had this for 4 years the sliding scale left me with £700 towards another mattress. I did ask for a refund but they would not give one to me.

So the new Natures Finest 8500 Pillow Top Gentle, was delivered in Feb 2020. This obviously can not be turned over so only rotated. As I am only one who sleeps on this there are two corners which have started to sag. The mattress is terribly uncomfortable, if I sit, it completely dips there is no support. This is definitely not what I would expect from such an expensive mattress. l feel like I am laying in a hammock.

I have contacted and am waiting for a response from Harrison’s. Must say I am reluctant to throw more money away on another one of their mattresses.

Please can you advise where I go from here. My Daughter has a Latex topped bed which I must say feels very comfortable. I went for a Harrison’s mattress as I do get very hot when sleeping.

Thank you
Erica

Hi Erica,

Thanks for getting in touch and we're sorry to hear you're having such bad luck with your Harrisons mattresses. This is really unfortunate as Harrisons are one of the better mattress manufacturers here in the UK and they are well respected.

In terms of your first mattress, given Harrisons accepted there was a fault then we won't go into details about this model, However, its important to discuss guarantee vs warranty with mattresses. This is where most customers get a bit lost. It's an incredibly important detail when choosing a new bed or mattress.

A bed guarantee will cover the mattress from defects and failures for the term of that guarantee. Ie 5 years means that if a fault develops and is assessed by a furniture inspector then the company will usually either repair or replace. That's the guarantee that we apply to all of our models.

A warranty, however, is different. Most warranties are proportional which means that after a certain time usually 1-2 years you then only get back a proportion of the original cost of the mattress. Even if it develops a fault as you're deemed to have 'used a portion of the bed' before the fault. We think this is rather unfair to consumers.

We never use warranties only guarantees. You can read more on the different brands guarantee terms and conditions in this detailed article here.

Natures Finest Pillowtop 8500 DNair Mattress Review:

Let's have a look at the replacement mattress and why it too may be failing or showing signs of an issue. The first thing Erica is its a pillow top mattress construction method. Meaning you can only use one side of the mattress. You can't turn it to even out natural settlement. You also can't remove the pillow top topper. So when this compresses and sags that's it. It's game over. We've long battled for other brands to avoid this mattress construction technique.

This mattress also uses micro springs, which again we refuse to use. This is because in our tests they serve very little purpose in terms of support. More to increase the spring counts from a marketing perspective in retail. They also reduce the space for more supportive upholstery which is why we choose to avoid them. We prefer a quality full-size pocket spring unit and then copious amounts of fibres which act as secondary support and then a comfort layer for your bed.
Whilst this mattress features natural fibres, they are all contained in this pillowtop layer. The main mattress itself from Dreams cutaway on their website shows its 100% synthetic. It's a shame that this model doesn't remove the pillowtop and then split the fibres onto each side of the pocket spring unit. That way it could be turned each month and avoid early sagging or compression which it sounds like you are experiencing.

Natural fibres will keep you cooler at night and although Latex is natural it is still far more heat retentive than other fibres. We would advise you have a look at our Artisan Naturals mattress as a comparative model that will give a medium feel to you but is 2 sided and far more breathable. It contains a high end spring unit (calico encased pocket spring) and zero micro springs. You should always be aiming for a two-sided model where possible. Even if you struggle to turn it, getting a friend to help at least means you have two sides of your bed to play with avoiding the issues you've experienced with the last two mattresses.

2: HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER

5: 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [49MM ] [1.28MM ]

We advise you speak to Harrisons about getting a full refund and then really consider the next mattress model to help prevent a reoccurrence of this issues.
We hope that helps and if you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.
Sleep well
