Many thanks for your question on Vispring and J Marshalls mattresses. You're right that the J Marshall range definitely feels geared towards the mobile young professional wanting to buy a mid range mattress using their website during a lunch break, given the speedy configurator. However, their mattress, base and headboard is still coming in at £2.5k for a kingsize so it's not a discount option! The kingsize No2 mattress (which uses similar numbers to Savoirs bed range) is coming in at £1000 for a kingsize mattress only.

Let's have a look what's inside this mattress which is listed as a soft feel mattress, far softer than the Baronette superb by Vispring.

J Marhsalls No2 Mattress Breakdown:

No. 2 is made with 1200 pocketed springs for head-to-toe comfort, however you sleep. It’s deep-filled with natural  fibres – pure new wool, sustainable Tencel™, soft bamboo  and fleecy alpaca – which make for an amazingly comfortable sleep. Hand-tufting the filling keeps the mattress feeling  as comfortable year after year. And it’s finished with  Belgian Damask ticking (the silky top layer) for a consistently smooth feel

This mattress uses a mix of natural and Tencel a reconstituted natural wood fibres. However, J Marhsall doesn't give any details on the GSM so it's really hard to accurately compare this mattress model without this key data. However, looking at the depth of 21cm we know it will be around the 1500-2000 gsm level. As a comparison, most Vispring and our mattress ranges are from 27cm-33cm deep, showing just how much more fibre is contained.

It uses a 1.4 gauge medium feel pocket spring. You're right to point out that its a spunbond pocket spring. You would expect this at the price point. Only mattresses of £1200+ can feature calico given their cost. Don't confuse spring tension with comfort preferences though, spring tensions are created entirely for your weight range and the upholstery is the area that dictates the feel of the mattress.

It's machine side stitched by the look of it, which is how they are getting this down in price to the mid point. Hand side stitching is incredibly time-consuming, both ourselves and Vispring hand-stitch our natural fibre range for ultimate in mattress construction.

Alternatives to the Baronette Superb Mattress:

I would advise you have a look at our Artisan 1500 or Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000. The Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has a manufactured dual layered spring system in the construction and feels ever so slightly softer than the Artisan 1500. The Artisan 1500 mattress has 53% natural fillings as opposed to 85% for the Tailored Pocket 2000. Anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper is best looking at natural fillings as they provide a cool sleep surface. Both of these are around the same mid level price point so are worthy of consideration!
